In this guide
With kids in Ñemby, start with Cerro Ñemby in the morning or late afternoon: it has a playground, a sand football pitch and trails, opens 7:00 to 20:00 and sits about 15 km from Asunción (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). For the rest of the day, pick by age: the fish pond in the main square for little ones, the skate park for teenagers and a dinosaur-themed dinner to finish.
What to do with children up to 6
- Cerro Ñemby playground: the park has children's play equipment, used under parents' supervision, and a sand football pitch (Última Hora, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Stay in the lower area near the swings and save the climb for another day.
- Plaza Fulgencio Yegros: opposite the San Lorenzo parish church in the centre, with a fountain and a pond with fish (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). The perfect short loop after nap time.
- Paseo Parque in Villa Elisa: if you want another park nearby, the neighbouring city has paths, gardens, parking and a fenced area, with free entry (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)); in 2022 it had play areas with sandpits (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
And with school-age kids?
- Climb the hill: there is a walking path of about 7 km, chess tables next to the pitch and a view from the top (Última Hora, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). With primary-school children, walk one stretch and turn back; the full loop is long for small legs in the heat.
- The quarry lagoon: it is for looking and photos only. The water is stagnant with algae, so no swimming (Última Hora, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
- Casa de la Cultura: the city's main museum, on Calle 9 de Agosto next to the main square; Ñemby also has the Museo Histórico Simeón Denis (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Handy for a local history school project.
What is there for teenagers?
- Skate park at Plaza Virgen de Schoenstatt: in the centre (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). In 2016 Ñemby opened Paraguay's first public skate park (Última Hora, 2016 (opens in a new tab)). Bring a board, skates or a bike, or just go to watch.
- Local football: Club Cristóbal Colón plays at Estadio Pablo Patricio Bogarín, which holds about 2,500 people (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). A Sunday match is a cheap outing for a group.
Where to eat as a family
- Dino Park Burgers: a two-storey dinosaur-themed restaurant aimed at children (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)); it opens in the evening, according to its Instagram (opens in a new tab). Check the day's hours there before you set off.
- Municipal market: the central "mercadito" sells fruit and food (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Good for a quick snack between the square and the hill.
Which dates are worth it with kids?
- Holy Week on the hill: in 2023 the municipality staged the Palm Sunday re-enactment by the lagoon from 15:00 to 19:00 and the Good Friday Stations of the Cross along a "path of lights" from 19:00 to 21:00, with free entry (Última Hora, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Palm Sunday is easier with small children; for Friday night, bring a torch.
- August, San Lorenzo feast: in 2024 the crafts, industry and trade fair was set up outside the parish church and town hall with free entry, closing on 10 August with a folk music festival from 20:00 (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)).
Getting to the hill and what not to bring
From the Acceso Sur (PY01), take Avenida Bernardino Caballero and turn onto Calle 2 de Agosto: the main entrance is less than a block away and there is parking (Última Hora, 2017 (opens in a new tab)). Alcohol, sound systems and vehicles are not allowed inside. By bus from Asunción, lines include the 15-2, 38 and 47 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Bring water, hats and sunscreen: most of the outing is in full sun.
