With kids, San Bernardino works best as a short, well-paced plan: a morning at La Rotonda beach and park, with its cycle path and a catamaran ride; lunch in the town centre; then the Casona Büttner visitor centre, the stairway to the Virgin lookout or, for older children, the Aventura Xtrema tree-top course. On Saturdays add the market on the plaza. The town sits on Lake Ypacaraí, about 50 km from Asunción.

What can kids do by the lake?

La Rotonda beach and park. The easiest stop with children: open space, a cycle path, lakeside photos and craft and food stalls. In summer 2025 entry was free, the stalls ran daily from 08:00 to 20:00, a catamaran ride cost G. 30,000 and supervised parking G. 10,000, according to ABC Color (opens in a new tab). A 2020 ABC feature said children rode the La Rotonda boat trip for free (opens in a new tab); ask at the jetty whether that still applies.

  • Tip: arrive before 10:00 on January weekends, while shade and parking are still easy to find.

Luis F. Vache cycle path. About 3 km of bike lane running to Avenida Guillermo Naumann (ABC Color, 2020 (opens in a new tab)). Good for kids who can already ride on their own; bring helmets and water.

About the water. The municipal beach holds an environmental licence, but the environment ministry (MADES) says that does not make the lake safe for swimming (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Sand, ball games and the catamaran are fine; swimming is not. Pack a change of clothes in case feet get wet anyway.

What is there to see in town with kids?

Visitor experience centre (Casona Büttner). At the corner of Colonos Alemanes and the Nuestra Señora de la Asunción pedestrian street. When it opened in January 2024 it offered a virtual-reality tour of the town and local crafts, open Monday to Wednesday 08:00 to 20:00 and Thursday to Sunday 08:00 to 21:00 (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). A good indoor stop for the hottest hour.

Stairway and Virgen Aparecida lookout. 110 steps up to a viewpoint over the lake (ABC Color, 2020 (opens in a new tab)). Kids like counting the steps; go late in the afternoon with water and comfortable shoes.

Granite geosite on Calle Decoud. A granite rock about 550 million years old, according to ABC Color (opens in a new tab). A short, free stop on the way to the lake.

Casa Hassler. A cultural centre with a library of around 10,000 volumes and a museum of the first settlers' belongings; in 2020 it opened Monday to Saturday, 08:00 to 15:00 (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). In summer it adds evening dance and art: the 2025 season opened on 4 January at 21:00 (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).

Is there adventure for older kids?

Aventura Xtrema. San Bernardino's adventure-tourism operator. Its tree-top course has 14 obstacles, and it also runs canoeing, an 8 m climbing wall, archery and a pendulum jump from a 14 m tower at the José Asunción Flores amphitheatre (InfoNegocios, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). Última Hora (opens in a new tab) listed it in 2023 among holiday options for families with children, and ABC Color (opens in a new tab) noted that activities are booked in advance. None of those reports gives a minimum age or prices, so ask when you book.

What is on on Saturdays?

"Shopping mercado San Ber" market. On Plaza Gral. Bernardino Caballero, Saturdays 08:00 to 14:00, with cheese, honey, fruit, leather and wood crafts, traditional food and desserts (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). It makes an easy late breakfast with kids; try something sweet, buy cheese for the trip home and bring cash.

How do you plan the day as a family?

  • Half day (toddlers): La Rotonda and the catamaran in the morning, early lunch in the centre, home before nap time.
  • Full day: add Casona Büttner in the heat of the day, Casa Hassler or the geosite, and the stairway at sunset.
  • Weekend: Saturday for the market and adventure; Sunday, the lake early and leave before 16:00 to beat the queue back.

How do you get there from Asunción?

By car, take Route PY02 (Mariscal Estigarribia) to the San Bernardino turn-off, or the Luque–San Bernardino road that skirts the other side of the lake (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). Buses from Asunción also run along PY02. With children, keep water, sunscreen and hats in the car: the centre and waterfront are walkable, but the sun is strong from December to February, the high season.
