To choose a doctor or medical centre in Limpio, start with your coverage: without insurance, your way in is the family health unit (USF) in your neighbourhood or the Hospital Distrital de Limpio; if you pay into IPS, the social security unit assigned to you; and with private insurance or cash, a private clinic in your plan's network. Then choose by specialty, the doctor's actual hours and how close it is, because Limpio is spread out and traffic on Route PY03 is heavy.

USF, hospital, IPS or private clinic?

  • Neighbourhood USF: Limpio has 20 family health units across the district (Ministry of Health, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). For check-ups, vaccines, repeat prescriptions and first visits, it is the closest option and usually the shortest wait.
  • Hospital Distrital de Limpio: the city's public hospital. It handles about 25,000 patient visits a month and offers emergency care, paediatric and adult wards, surgery, maternity, neonatal care, a laboratory, mammography, X-ray, ultrasound, dentistry, family planning and vaccination, plus specialties such as paediatric cardiology, neurology and psychology (Ministry of Health, January 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
  • IPS: if you contribute, check the IPS portal for your assigned unit and how to book. Do not assume a private clinic is covered without asking.
  • Private clinic or practice: more flexible hours, but you pay for the visit or use your insurance.

How do you get an appointment at the district hospital?

According to the Ministry of Health (opens in a new tab), appointments are booked in person at the admissions desk from 05:00 until the day's slots run out. In practice:

  • If you need a specialist, arrive early with your ID card.
  • Ask at admissions which days your specialty is seen, so you do not make the trip for nothing.
  • For a routine check-up, try your USF first: staff there can advise you or refer you.

In January 2026 the hospital opened a new emergency and paediatric ward block and refurbished maternity and the lab (Ministry of Health (opens in a new tab)).

Is it an emergency?

In an emergency, call 141 (the out-of-hospital medical emergency service) or 911 (ITU (opens in a new tab)). Do not waste time looking for an appointment or messaging clinics.

If it is not an emergency, such as a manageable fever, a check-up or a prescription, start with the USF or a private practice and keep the hospital's emergency department for what cannot wait.

How do you choose a private clinic in Limpio?

  • Coverage: ask your insurer for the provider list and check that both the clinic and the doctor are on it. Prepaid health plans must be registered with the Superintendencia de Salud, which can shut them down and cancel their registration if they do not comply (Última Hora, 2024 (opens in a new tab)).
  • Clear prices: as a private patient, ask on WhatsApp how much the visit costs and whether tests are charged separately.
  • Specialist hours: ask which days the doctor you need is in, not just the clinic's opening hours.
  • Tests on site: a lab or ultrasound at the same clinic saves you another trip.
  • Location: Limpio has neighbourhoods such as Centro, Piquete Cue, Rincón del Peñón, Salado, Mbayué and San Marcos (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), and the city grew along Route PY03. Pick somewhere on your daily route; for complex tests Asunción is 19 km away, but compare rush-hour travel time, not just distance.

What should you bring to the appointment?

  • Your ID card and your insurance or IPS details.
  • Previous test results and reports, on paper or on your phone.
  • A list of the medicines you take, with doses.
  • Water and a hat if you will be queuing early: summer highs in Limpio reach 40 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).

Before you leave, ask for the diagnosis, prescription and next steps in writing. You will need them for the follow-up or if another doctor sees you later.
