Shopping and errands in Asunción: one area per outing

Group your shopping and errands in Asunción by area: Villa Morra malls, downtown or Mercado 4, with hours, payments and a heat-proof order.

Shoppers carrying colorful bags walk a sunny palm-lined street past striped awnings and outdoor shoes.

Shopping and errands in Asunción work best when you keep each outing to one area: Villa Morra (Mariscal López and Santa Teresa), the Aviadores del Chaco strip, downtown around Palma, or Mercado 4 in Pettirossi. Do the open-air part first thing, save the air-conditioned mall for the hot hours, and pay by QR or transfer so you are not hunting for an ATM.

Pick one area per outing

Area · Good for · Where

Villa Morra · Clothes, supermarket, food court, all indoors · Paseo La Galería (Avda. Santa Teresa, between Aviadores del Chaco and Herminio Maldonado) and Shopping Mariscal (Quesada 5050)

Aviadores del Chaco · Brands, cinema, food court · delSol (Aviadores del Chaco at Profesora Delia González)

Downtown · Mid-price clothing and homeware, downtown paperwork · Unicentro Casa Central (Palma and 15 de Agosto)

Mercado 4 · Fruit and veg, cheap clothing, electronics, herbs · Barrio Pettirossi, Rodríguez de Francia and Perú

Crossing between areas at rush hour eats the morning: in September 2026 the city's Plan ASU 400 had 138 blocks under works, including stretches of Mariscal López, España, San Martín and Avenida De la Victoria (Municipalidad de Asunción (opens in a new tab)).

Mercado 4: doing the big shop

The market fills the blocks between Perú, Pettirossi, General Aquino and Rodríguez de Francia, spilling towards Ana Díaz, with about 2,400 to 2,500 stall-permit holders plus 800 shop tenants (InfoNegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).

  • Go in the morning: produce is fresher and the heat has not hit yet.
  • Card and QR work: since 2025 the city has given vendors POS terminals to take cards, QR and transfers, under an agreement with Bancard (Hoy, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Still carry small notes.
  • By bus: lines 2, 21, 25, 27, 29 and 133 run from Haedo street downtown (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)).

What to buy, sections and safety are in our Mercado 4 guide.

Mall hours

On Sundays, according to their own websites (October 2026), Paseo La Galería and Shopping Mariscal open their shops 10:00 to 21:00, La Galería's supermarket from 07:00, and Unicentro Casa Central 11:00 to 18:00 (Paseo La Galería (opens in a new tab); Shopping Mariscal (opens in a new tab); Unicentro (opens in a new tab)). Full detail in Sunday services and hours in Asunción.

Paperwork and payments on the same trip

  • City hall: municipal service centres open Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 16:00, and one sits inside the bus terminal (República Argentina and Fernando de la Mora). Taxes and fines can also be paid via Aquí Pago, Pago Express, Pago Móvil or online banking (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
  • Transfers: SPI runs 24/7 for amounts up to ₲10,000,000 (BCP (opens in a new tab)), so paying someone does not require a branch visit.
  • Pharmacy: for an on-duty one, see pharmacies in Asunción.

Heat: order matters

The Health Ministry advises outdoor activity before 10:00 or after 17:00 in summer (MSPBS (opens in a new tab)). Plan the day like this:

  1. Early: Mercado 4 or anything on foot between stalls.
  2. Mid-morning: any counter-service errand.
  3. Midday and afternoon: the air-conditioned mall; frozen and dairy items last.

Before you leave

  • One area per outing; if two, keep them on the same avenue.
  • ID or passport for paperwork, a banking app with QR, and small notes.
  • Your own bags, and a cooler bag for fresh food.
  • A topped-up JAHA or Más card for the bus: Gs. 3,400 with air conditioning, Gs. 2,300 without (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)).
