To eat out in Caaguazú, first decide whether you're passing through on Route PY02 or eating in town. On the road, pick a place with parking and easy access from the service road; for dinner, message ahead and check how late the kitchen serves. The choice runs "from fast food on every corner to traditional dishes", according to mayor José Ríos Núñez (Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).

Passing through on PY02 or eating in town?

Caaguazú sits on PY02, about 180 km from Asunción and 144 km from Ciudad del Este (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), and routes 8 and 13 also cross it (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)). That makes it a natural mid-journey stop.

  • Passing through: the PY02 widening added service roads in Caaguazú's urban area, bike lanes and seven footbridges (Infonegocios, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). Choose a place on your side of the road so you don't need to turn back to rejoin your lane.
  • From Coronel Oviedo: Oviedo is at km 132 on the same road (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), so Caaguazú is roughly 50 km further on. Handy if you want to break the trip a bit later.
  • In town: for a relaxed meal, look near the centre around Plaza Bartolomé Aquino and the Inmaculada Concepción church (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), or in your own barrio, such as San Roque, Santa Librada or Ciudad Nueva.

What kind of food are you after?

  • Something quick: lomitos (steak sandwiches), burgers and pizza, done in half an hour. Ask how long the order takes if you're travelling.
  • Traditional food: Caaguazú department is Paraguay's top cassava (mandioca) producer (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). Ask what the dish of the day is and what time it's served.
  • Weekday lunch: look for a set menu or pay-by-weight food near where you work or run errands.
  • Family or group dinner: pizzerias, grills and resto-bars. For groups over six, book.

What to ask before you go

  • Air conditioning: summer highs reach about 42 °C and winter lows drop to 0 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). In January a cooled dining room beats a terrace; in July, check the place is enclosed.
  • Parking: if you're driving or carrying cargo, confirm there's parking off the highway.
  • Portions: individual or for sharing; at grills it's common to order for several people.
  • Meat-free or gluten-free options, if anyone needs them.
  • Payment: QR now accounts for 68.1% of electronic payments on the Bancard network, and restaurants make up 13% of those transactions (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Still carry cash for small places.
  • Invoice: consumer agency Sedeco reminds businesses they must issue an invoice (factura) for every transaction (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Ask for one, especially on a work trip.

When is it busiest?

  • Match days: Club Deportivo Caaguazú has played its home games at Estadio Bosque Grande since 2024 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). On match nights, book or eat early.
  • Weekends: Friday and Saturday dinner fill up most; message ahead to secure a table.
  • Long weekends: if you're on PY02 over a long weekend, eating a little before or after midday saves you the wait.
