To sleep in Caaguazú, first decide why you're there: for a work night or a stopover on Ruta PY02, look in the town center near the highway and the plaza; for a weekend with kids, the cabins at the Techapyrã complex, about 3 km off PY02, are the plan. The city sits at km 179 of PY02, at the junction with PY13, so many travelers use it to break the drive between Asunción and Ciudad del Este.

Which area should you stay in?

  • Town center: life revolves around Plaza Bartolomé Aquino and the Inmaculada Concepción church (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It's the practical base for work trips or family visits, with shops and food close by.
  • On PY02: if you're leaving early, staying near the highway saves you driving in and out of town with a loaded car. Ask whether the room faces the road, because of the noise.
  • Outskirts: complexes with cabins, pools and green space are outside the center. They're for staying, not for a quick overnight.

To see what's available, open the map on your phone, search "hotel" or "hospedaje" in Caaguazú and check the exact location against your plans before you message them.

Techapyrã: cabins and a park for kids

An eco-tourism complex of about five hectares in Caaguazú district, in barrio San José Apeputy, about 3 km off PY02 via calle Jacú San Miguel (ABC Color (opens in a new tab), Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)).

  • Lodging: standard and VIP cabins, a two-story house and treehouses.
  • On site: a "Jurassic park" with dinosaur replicas toured by mini-train, a zip line, a suspension bridge, adult and kids' pools, springs and a restaurant.
  • Day hours: in 2021 day entry ran 9:00 to 18:00, Monday to Sunday, per Infonegocios; that year it drew about 20,000 visitors.
  • Tip: published prices date from 2021, so ask for the current cabin rate and whether park entry is included in your stay.

Passing through between Asunción and Ciudad del Este?

Since 2024, PY02 has been a dual carriageway along the 149 km between Ypacaraí and Caaguazú (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), so the drive from Asunción is easier than it used to be. Caaguazú is 173 km from Asunción and 135 km from Ciudad del Este, according to Wikipedia (opens in a new tab).

  • Tired at night? Sleeping in Caaguazú and leaving in the morning means you drive the last stretch to Ciudad del Este in daylight.
  • Heading to Villarrica? Stop earlier: Coronel Oviedo, at km 132, is the junction with PY08 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
  • Flying in or out? The nearest airport is Guaraní International, on the Ciudad del Este side, about 120 km away, per Wikipedia.

How to check a place is licensed

Paraguay's tourism ministry, Senatur, recommends checking the national tourism register (Registur) before booking: it lists authorized providers, lodging included, and helps you avoid a hotel that only exists in a photo (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). Apartments and houses rented through Airbnb or social media must also be registered with Registur under Tourism Law 2828/05 (La Nación (opens in a new tab)).

What to ask before you book

  • Parking: if you're driving, ask whether it's enclosed and on the property.
  • Late arrival: give your estimated arrival time and get a number to message if you're delayed.
  • Invoice: traveling for work? Ask for a "factura" with your company's tax ID (RUC) when booking, not at checkout.
  • Deposit and cancellation: get the deposit amount and refund deadline in writing.
  • Event dates: Caaguazú is a university town and has hosted the "Caaguazú Lee" International Book Fair since 2003 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)); if your dates coincide with an event, book earlier.

If you have a free afternoon

Caaguazú is known as Paraguay's "Wood Capital" and is growing as a commercial and logistics hub served by routes 2, 8 and 13 (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)). With spare time, walk Plaza Bartolomé Aquino and the Inmaculada Concepción church, or look for Ykua La Patria, the spring where the first settlers made camp (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
