Family time in Ciudad del Este works best with free parks right in the city (the Área 1 linear park, Lago de la República and Ñande Renda beach), indoor play centres in the malls for rainy or very hot days, and Itaipú and the Monday Falls close by in Hernandarias and Presidente Franco. Here is where each place is, what to do there and how to plan the day with kids.
Free parks and beaches in the city
- Parque Lineal Manuel Ortiz Guerrero (Área 1). About 18 hectares run by Itaipú, with trails, bike paths, a footbridge, exercise equipment and playgrounds. Open daily 06:00 to 20:00, free with an ID card (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). Families favour it because it feels safe (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Bring an adult's ID and go early or after 17:00, when the sun eases off.
- Lago de la República. Steps from the shopping district, with bike paths, walkways, lots of greenery and an amphitheatre (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). The loop is about 4 km (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)), a good distance for a bike ride or a stroller walk.
- Costanera Ñande Renda (Km 8 Acaray). An artificial beach on Lake Acaray opened in 2021, with about 800 metres of sand, an inclusive stepped beach, playgrounds, a skate park, volleyball courts and an outdoor gym. Free (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab); ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Bring shade or use the wooded areas around midday.
- Museo El Mensú. Housed in the building that was the first town hall, with historic photos, pioneers' objects and the old clock from the downtown roundabout. Free (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). A short stop for school-age kids.
If it rains or is too hot: indoor play
From an ABC Color round-up in 2022 (opens in a new tab) (prices may have changed):
- Shopping París, fourth floor (downtown). A trampoline room with bouncy castles, and a virtual-reality room with more than 50 games. They opened Tuesday to Sunday, 12:00 to 21:00; the trampoline room cost G. 50,000 per person per hour, grip socks included. Zone Kids is in the same mall.
- Arena Kids, in Shopping Arena (Avenida Itaipú Oeste, former Km 3).
- Diver Toys, in Plaza City (Ruta PY02, former Km 8).
- Cuchipark, on Ruta PY02 (former Km 3.5).
These play centres charged G. 20,000 to G. 35,000 per child per hour, with carousels, mini trains, slides, ball pits and bumper cars. Pair them with lunch in the same mall and leave the shopping for later.
Itaipú: dam, Tekotopa and the Monumental Lighting
On the Paraguayan side Itaipú's attractions are free, but several need a booking (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)).

Itaipú's attractions close on December 25 and 31 and January 1 (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
Monday Falls, in Presidente Franco
About 10 km from Ciudad del Este, the falls drop more than 40 metres. You enter either through the municipal park (viewpoints, trails and a panoramic lift down to the riverbank) or through the private Parque Aventura Monday, with a zip line and camping. In 2022 the municipal park charged G. 25,000 for Paraguayans and USD 10 for foreigners, with the lift G. 30,000 extra; Parque Aventura opened 08:00 to 17:00 (Última Hora, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). The flow is most impressive after rain, but wear shoes with good grip for wet viewpoints.
How to plan the day with kids
- Half day in town: Parque Lineal in the morning, then lunch and indoor play in a mall during the hottest hours.
- Full day: Monday Falls in the morning, then lunch and an afternoon at Ñande Renda or Lago de la República.
- Friday or Saturday: Tekotopa by day in Hernandarias and, booked by Thursday, the Monumental Lighting at night.
If you are crossing from Foz do Iguaçu over the Friendship Bridge, keep outdoor plans for the morning or late afternoon and use the downtown malls as a refuge in the midday heat.
