In this guide
Ciudad del Este's bars cluster in two areas: Avenida del Lago, facing Lago de la República, and Avenida Campo Vía in Área 3 (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab); La Nación, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). There is also nightlife in Boquerón and in the downtown area near the Friendship Bridge (ABC Color, 2020 (opens in a new tab)). Choose by plan (a craft-beer spot to talk, a bar with live music or a club to dance) and sort out your ride home first, because there is no public transport at night.
Where to go out in Ciudad del Este
- Avenida del Lago and the Lago de la República waterfront: the best-known nightlife strip, with lake-view bars, beer gardens with outdoor seating and venues playing live Brazilian pagode (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). Good for starting the night at sunset.
- Avenida Campo Vía, Área 3: together with the lake area it forms the city's dining hub (La Nación, 2023 (opens in a new tab)), with resto-bars hosting DJs and live shows and food-park style spots that suit groups with different tastes (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
- Boquerón: a neighbourhood with Arab restaurants serving hookah and bars with live bands for dancing (ABC Color, 2020 (opens in a new tab)).
- Downtown near the bridge: better for dinner than for a late night (ABC Color, 2020 (opens in a new tab)).
Venues change fast: many places named in 2020 to 2022 guides may have closed or been renamed. Check the venue's Instagram before you go to see whether it opens that night and what is on.
What kind of night are you after?
- Conversation: a beer bar or a place with tables outside by the lake, early and on a weeknight.
- Live music: several bars have guest artists, DJs or pagode, and some open only Wednesday to Saturday (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). Check the line-up and any cover charge.
- Dancing: clubs start late and fill up at weekends. According to the city's bar and restaurant association, 90% of nightclub customers are Brazilian, thanks to around 15,000 Brazilian students living in Ciudad del Este and Presidente Franco, while bars draw mostly Paraguayans (La Nación, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Expect plenty of Brazilian music.
- Food and drinks: ask when the kitchen closes; it usually shuts before the bar.
How to pay
- QR: now 68.1% of electronic payments in Paraguay, according to Bancard (ABC Color, May 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
- Pix: since February 2024, merchants on the Bancard network can accept Pix from Brazilian customers (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)). Not every venue has it, so ask before ordering.
- Reais and US dollars: accepted in CDE's commercial areas, but exchange rates vary from place to place (Western Union (opens in a new tab)). Ask what rate they use before you pay.
Getting home safely
- No night buses: the restaurant association notes there is no public transport at night and people rely on ride-hailing apps (La Nación, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Order your ride from inside the venue rather than walking empty streets.
- Driving means zero alcohol: the highway police apply zero tolerance; from 0.200 mg/L in breath it is a serious offence, from 0.251 a very serious one, and from 0.400 a criminal offence (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
- ID: selling or serving alcohol to anyone under 20 in public venues is prohibited (Law 1,642/2000, La Nación (opens in a new tab)). Carry your ID or passport.
Special events
The biggest is Réveillon, the New Year's Eve party the municipality holds by Lago de la República. For 2024–2025, Avenidas Concejal Romero, Mariscal Estigarribia and del Lago were closed to traffic, with a live-music stage, fireworks over the lake at midnight and free entry (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). If you plan to go out that night, book early and expect roads around the lake to be closed.
Ciudad del Este or Foz do Iguaçu?
A few years ago, locals crossed to Foz do Iguaçu for a night out; now it also works the other way, with Brazilians and Argentines coming to Ciudad del Este to eat and go out (ABC Color, 2020 (opens in a new tab)). If you are staying in CDE, stay on this side and avoid crossing the bridge in the small hours; if you are staying in Foz, plan your return before you set off.
