In this guide
Going out in Luque centres on the Peatonal Histórica, the pedestrian stretch of Calle Mariscal López with old houses, food and shows downtown; by day there is Parque Ñu Guasu and the CONMEBOL Museum, and when Sportivo Luqueño plays, the Estadio Feliciano Cáceres. Below is what to do at each place, where it is and the dates when the city fills with events.
What to do in central Luque
- Peatonal Histórica. On Calle Mariscal López between Teniente Herrero Bueno and Rosario, with colonial and century-old buildings, food and live shows (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Some of the old houses around it have become leisure venues (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). It suits a relaxed evening: walk, sit down for a bite and see if there is a folk night on.
- Santuario Virgen del Rosario. The patron saint's church, completed in 1939 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), steps from the centre. Look in before dinner, especially in October.
- Plaza General Aquino. The main square, with the mausoleum of General José Elizardo Aquino (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab); ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). A good meeting point to start on foot.
- Old railway station. One of the historic sites included in city walking routes (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)).
Filigree jewellery and harps
Luque is known for gold and silver filigree and for workshops making Paraguayan harps and guitars (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). Avenida General Aquino was historically lined with jewellery workshops (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Browse by day, when shops are open, and save the Peatonal for the evening.
Football: CONMEBOL and Sportivo Luqueño
- CONMEBOL Museum (South American Football Museum). Next to CONMEBOL's headquarters, near the airport (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Open Monday to Friday 08:00 to 18:00 and Saturday 09:00 to 12:00; entry is free with advance booking at conmebol.com/museo-conmebol. It holds shirts from Libertadores and Sudamericana champions and items linked to Pelé, Maradona and Messi (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). A good morning plan if you fly out in the afternoon.
- Estadio Feliciano Cáceres. Home of Sportivo Luqueño, holding about 27,000 people (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). It hosted Copa América 1999 matches (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Check the club's fixtures and buy tickets early when a big club is in town.
Outdoors: Parque Ñu Guasu
One of the largest parks in greater Asunción, with tennis, basketball and football courts and the Las Residentas monument (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It has walking, running and cycling circuits, shaded rest areas, toilets, cold-water fountains every kilometre and a first-aid post; on the May 1, 2025 holiday it opened 05:00 to 21:30 (Hoy, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). It is Luque's best picnic spot: bring mate or tereré and go early or around sunset.
Dates to plan around
- February 22, "Luque capital" anniversary. The municipality holds events on the Peatonal: in 2022 a 19:30 play recreated the time when Luque was capital of the Republic (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)), and in 2023 there was a folk night with the municipal dance school and Sportivo Luqueño's band (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)).
- May 1: Sportivo Luqueño's anniversary.

If you are passing through the airport
Silvio Pettirossi International Airport sits at the entrance to Luque, about 10 minutes from Asunción (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). For a quick meal before a flight, the Plaza Madero mall is on Autopista Silvio Pettirossi at Torokay street, on the way to the airport, with restaurants and a 24-hour supermarket (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab); La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab); Hoy, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). With more time, pair the CONMEBOL Museum with a walk in Ñu Guasu. To reach the centre, the main roads are Avenida General Elizardo Aquino, Autopista Ñu Guasu and Avenida Las Residentas.
