The best gym in Ñemby is the one on your way: near home or on your route to work, ideally on the same side of the PY01 highway. Before you pay, go at the time you will actually train, see how crowded it is, and get the price and plan conditions in writing. If you want to start without spending anything, Cerro Ñemby is a good place to walk and work out in the open air.
Where should your gym be?
The PY01, the highway formerly called Acceso Sur, splits the city in two. Crossing it at rush hour, on the way to or from Asunción or San Lorenzo, can eat the time you had set aside for training. So start by looking in your own barrio, whether that is Villa Anita, Mbokajaty, Salinas, Centro, Vista Alegre, Pa'i Ñu, Los Naranjos or Cañadita.
Keep roadworks in mind too: from August 2026, grade-separated interchanges are planned along the PY01, including one in the Ñemby area (Hoy (opens in a new tab)). If the gym you like is across the highway, try the trip for a couple of days before paying for several months.
If you get around by bus, Ñemby has many lines to Asunción, San Lorenzo, Fernando de la Mora and Lambaré. A gym near your usual stop is easier to stick with than a nicer one off your route.
What should you check on a trial visit?
Go at the exact time you plan to train, for example right after work, which is usually the busiest slot. Look at:
- Whether you have to wait for the machines or benches you will use most.
- Ventilation or air conditioning. In midsummer, a closed room without AC becomes unbearable and is the first excuse to quit.
- Water to refill your bottle, changing rooms, showers and lockers.
- Whether a trainer will set up your routine and correct your form, especially if you are a beginner.
- Whether the equipment is in good shape and there is room to stretch.
Ask for a trial class or day pass. Many places offer one, and an hour is enough to tell whether the vibe suits you.
Monthly fee, long plan or day pass?
If you are just starting, go month to month even if the annual plan looks cheaper. Paying months in advance only makes sense once you train consistently.
Before you pay, get in writing:
- The price in guaraníes and what it covers: weights room, classes, full hours or only some time slots. Paraguay's consumer protection office, SEDECO, notes that prices must be shown in guaraníes and every service must come with an invoice (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
- Whether you can freeze your membership for travel, illness or holidays.
- What happens if you want to leave before the plan ends.
- The date your month starts, so you do not pay for days you never used.
Keep the invoice and a screenshot of the message with the conditions. If the rules change later, SEDECO takes complaints through a form on its website, and according to the agency 8 out of 10 complaints end in an agreement.
For payment, ask whether they take QR or bank transfer: QR is now the most common way to pay by phone in Paraguay.
Group classes or weights room?
Pick whatever keeps you coming back:
- Weights room: works if you already know what to do or the gym has a trainer on the floor. Check that there are free weights, not only machines.
- Group classes (functional, dance, spinning and others): they help the habit stick because you have a fixed time and people expecting you. Ask how many classes run per week, whether you need to book a spot and how often they get cancelled.
- Both: if the plan includes both, confirm the class times match your free days.
Where can you train for free outdoors in Ñemby?
Cerro Ñemby, in barrio Caaguazú, is the city's main park. It has a walking path of about 7 km, a beach-soccer pitch and a children's play area, and its managers say exercise is what people ask for most (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). Trails climb to the top, with views over the town center and the PY01.
According to ABC Color, it is open from 07:00 to 20:00. In summer, go early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun drops, and bring water. Paired with two or three gym days a week, it is an easy way to add cardio at no extra cost.
