To find a doctor in Ñemby, first decide whether you need a general check-up, a specialist or urgent care, then where you will be seen: the city's public district hospital, IPS (social security) if you pay into it, or a private practice. For specialties such as endocrinology you will usually head to neighbouring San Lorenzo or to Asunción, so book before you travel.

General doctor, specialist or emergency?

In Paraguay a GP is usually listed as clínico or clínica médica. That is where you start for check-ups, blood pressure, diabetes, lab orders and referrals.

  • Clínica médica: routine care, chronic conditions, lab tests and referrals.
  • Specialist (endocrinology, rheumatology, cardiology…): once you have a referral or know what you need. Public services usually ask for a referral slip.
  • Urgent care: chest pain, shortness of breath, high fever in a baby, a bad fall. Do not wait for an appointment.
  • Emergency at home or on the street: call 141, the Health Ministry's SEME ambulance line (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).

District hospital, IPS or private?

Hospital Distrital de Ñemby. The city's public hospital, with an emergency ward and outpatient clinics; La Nación names it Hospital Distrital Nuestra Señora de Lourdes (La Nación, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). It is busy: in June 2023 outpatient and emergency areas were packed, especially paediatrics (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)), and in 2024 local officials asked for a new general hospital because the building no longer copes (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). It also runs specialist clinics: in 2025 rheumatology saw patients Tuesday to Thursday, though patients reported medicine shortages (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Go early and check at the pharmacy whether your medication is in stock.

IPS. Ñemby had no IPS unit of its own: according to Última Hora (opens in a new tab) (2015), insured residents were seen at the IPS health unit in San Antonio. Check with IPS which unit you are assigned to.

Private practices and clinics. The quickest route to a specialist. Ask the consultation fee up front, whether tests cost extra, and whether they issue a tax invoice (factura). If you use private health insurance, make sure the company is registered with the Superintendencia de Salud, which shut down six prepaid health firms in Asunción and Central in 2024 (La Nación (opens in a new tab)).

Where to see an endocrinologist near Ñemby

In the public system, the closest dedicated service is Endocrinology and Metabolism at Hospital de Clínicas in San Lorenzo, next door. According to La Nación (2024) (opens in a new tab):

  • Appointments are booked in person at the department office, 4th floor of the inpatient block, from the 1st to the 10th of each month, 8:00 to 11:00.
  • First visit: bring the referral slip stating the diagnosis and any test results you already have.
  • Returning patients bring their doctor's latest instructions.

In practice, get a referral from a GP first, then plan your trip to Clínicas within that ten-day window. For a private endocrinologist, search "endocrinólogo" on your phone's map, compare San Lorenzo and Asunción, and call to ask the fee and waiting time.

Before paying, look the doctor up on controldeprofesiones.mspbs.gov.py (opens in a new tab), the Health Ministry portal that shows whether they are registered, whether their specialty is registered, and whether the registration is current (Hoy, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).

Booking by phone in San Lorenzo

The Health Ministry's Hospital General de San Lorenzo books several specialties through Call Center 154, option 6, Monday to Friday, 6:30 to 11:30. Some services, including Diabetes, Diabetic Foot, Cardiology and Dentistry, still book in person (Agencia IP, June 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Call early; the line's hours are short.

Getting there and what to bring
