Entertainment in Villarrica comes down to three things: the Manuel Ortiz Guerrero park and the downtown museums by day, the newly reopened Teatro Municipal and the restobars along Ruta 8 at night, and a festival calendar (Carnaval Guaireño, San Juan and the Festival de la Raza) that fills the city. On an ordinary weekend, plan your day around the centre; if you want a big night out, time your trip to one of those dates.

What to do in the centre by day

  • Parque Manuel Ortiz Guerrero. The city's main park, built around the Ykuá Pytã lagoon, with paths and capybaras, ducks and birds you can see up close. The entrance is on Calle Dr. Bottrel (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Go in the morning or late afternoon, when the heat eases.
  • Museo Municipal Maestro Fermín López. Behind the Espíritu Santo Cathedral, in an 1842 house, with objects from the War of the Triple Alliance and the Chaco War (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It's your indoor plan if it rains.
  • Casa Cultural Ayala Talavera. On Calle General Díaz, with a permanent exhibition of painters from Guairá (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). It's a few blocks from the museum, so do both together.
  • Barrio Estación. The old railway station and a 1940s silo now covered in murals, a favourite photo stop (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).

To find your way, look up the "Circuitos de Villarrica" map on your map app, which marks the walking routes (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).

Is the Teatro Municipal open again?

Yes. The theatre opened in 1919 and was known nationally for its acoustics. It closed in May 2011 for a renovation that stalled several times (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). It reopened in late June 2026 with a gala called "Renace el teatro", featuring the municipal theatre company and the Sensus Aeternus choir (Última Hora, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). The city has at least seven active theatre groups, but shows are not announced far ahead, so follow the Municipalidad de Villarrica on social media.

Where to go out at night

The same Infonegocios piece admits Villarrica doesn't yet have Asunción's range of nightlife. An ordinary Friday means a long dinner; the festivals bring the big nights.

Which festivals happen during the year?

When · Festival · Where

February · Carnaval Guaireño · Sambódromo Rey Eduardo Vezzetti

May · Espíritu Santo patron saint festival and city anniversary (14 May) · Ortiz Guerrero park and centre

June · San Juan · Old railway station

October · Festival de la Raza · Several nights, different venues

  • Carnaval Guaireño. In 2026 there were four nights (20, 21, 27 and 28 February) and general admission cost G. 10,000, or G. 20,000 on the closing night (Última Hora, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Fridays are the cheaper nights.
  • San Juan. In 2025 it started at 18:00 with over 100 traditional food stalls, games such as pelota tata and toro candil, live music and free entry (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Bring a jacket: it's midwinter.
  • Festival de la Raza. The city's most awaited event. In 2025 the main night (Noche Gigante) was on 24 October at Club Cerro Corá, free in exchange for a donation of non-perishable food (Hoy, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Dates change every year, so check the municipality's pages from late September.

Getting there and back

Villarrica is about 172 km from Asunción; Ruta PY08 links it to Coronel Oviedo to the north, and the city has a bus terminal (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). On carnival or festival nights, book a bed instead of driving in the small hours. If you drink, don't drive: Paraguay has zero tolerance, and 0.400 mg/l on the breath is already a criminal offence (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
