For a night out in Asunción, pick the area first and the bar second: Paseo Carmelitas on Avenida España packs bars, a nightclub and restaurants into one block; Las Mercedes has neighbourhood bars and restaurants; and the historic centre adds classic bars and rooftop terraces. Work out how you will get home before you go.

Paseo Carmelitas: several plans without moving the car

Paseo Carmelitas (opens in a new tab) is at Avenida España and Malutín. It opened in 2005 and describes itself as a complex of bars, themed restaurants and entertainment (Paseo Carmelitas (opens in a new tab)). It is the safe bet when your group cannot agree: if one place is full, try the next door.

Las Mercedes: neighbourhood bars and restaurants

Between Avenida España and Defensa Nacional, and from Perú to General Santos, residents counted more than 42 food and drink businesses in an area zoned residential (AR3b). In May 2026 the city council approved suspending new licences and closing venues operating without permits (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). In practice, this is a neighbourhood for dinner and drinks at an easy pace, not partying until dawn, and it pays to choose licensed places.

The historic centre: classic bars and terraces

For height outside the centre, Kessel Sky Bar is on the 27th floor of Petra Tower on Avenida Dr. Felipe Molas López, serving Nikkei food (Visit Paraguay (opens in a new tab)); on Fridays and Saturdays it closes at 02:00 (Kessel (opens in a new tab)).

How to get home at night

  • Búho night buses: the night network runs from 22:00 to 03:30 with police officers on board. B1 goes to San Lorenzo via Fernando de la Mora, B2 to Limpio, B3 to Ñemby and B4 to Luque; several start from Calle Colón downtown (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
  • Ride-hailing apps and taxis: the practical choice after 03:30, or from Carmelitas and Las Mercedes.
  • If you drive: Paraguay has zero tolerance for alcohol at the wheel. From 0.400 mg/l in breath it is a criminal offence referred to prosecutors (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Pick a designated driver.

Noise and neighbours

Asunción's Ordinance 162/24 sets noise limits by zone; in residential areas the night-time limit is around 40 decibels, and fines can reach 3,000 daily minimum wages (Hoy (opens in a new tab)). That is why many venues in residential barrios such as Las Mercedes turn the music down early or close sooner. If you want to dance late, the nightclub at Paseo Carmelitas is the safer bet.
