To choose a vet in Obligado, first sort out the case: a dog or cat due for a vaccine can go to any nearby practice, but a farm animal or a night-time emergency needs something else. Message or call ahead with the species, weight and symptom, confirm they can see you that day and check that the vet is registered with SENACSA, Paraguay's animal health authority.
What kind of vet do you need?
Obligado is town and countryside at once. Besides cattle (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), the district has dairy, poultry and pig production, including a piglet unit in which the private sector invested about USD 12 million (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Many families also keep hens at home: the Municipality has run its annual chick handout for ten years in a row (Municipality of Obligado, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
Depending on your animal, look for:
- A practice or pet shop with a vet: vaccines, deworming, check-ups and planned neutering for dogs and cats.
- An agroveterinaria: feed, vaccines and supplies for farm animals, sometimes with a consulting room. Ask whether the vet visits farms and how far they travel.
- A clinic that can hospitalise: for surgery, tests or an animal that cannot go home that night.
If several hens fall ill or die at once, do not treat it as a one-off: call a vet with poultry experience and separate the sick birds.
How to tell if a vet clinic is licensed
SENACSA licenses vet clinics: they need a technical adviser who is a registered vet, must be set up as a legal business and need a municipal trading licence (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). Each vet must also register their degree with SENACSA and renew that registration every year under Law 6810/2021 (Ferrere (opens in a new tab)).
Feel free to ask who the responsible vet is. Malpractice or cruelty complaints go to SENACSA's Animal Health and Welfare Directorate or to the public prosecutor (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
When to vaccinate against rabies
For dogs and cats the schedule starts from three months of age, with boosters at 30 days and six months, then one dose a year for life (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Have every dose recorded in the vaccination booklet with stamp, signature and date: you will need it if you change vets or cross a border.
At night or in an emergency
Obligado sits at km 38 of Route PY06, with Hohenau at km 35 and Bella Vista at km 48 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)); Encarnación is about 40 km away (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). In practice your search area is the three Colonias Unidas towns, with Encarnación for cases that need more equipment.
Before setting off with a seriously ill animal, call and ask:
- Is a vet on site now, or do they have to call one in?
- Do they treat that species and size? Birds, exotics and large animals are not seen everywhere.
- Can the animal stay overnight?
- How do they charge? QR codes now handle 7 in 10 electronic payments in Paraguay (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)), but check whether they take QR, bank transfer or cash only.
Save two numbers in your phone: your usual vet and a back-up in another Colonias Unidas town.
Summer heat, winter frost
January and February highs reach about 38 °C, and winter can drop below -4 °C, especially near the Paraná (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- Summer: a vet quoted by InfoNegocios (opens in a new tab) advises walking early or at dusk, pressing your palm on the ground for five seconds (if it burns you, it burns their paws) and never leaving an animal in the car. Short-nosed breeds are most at risk. With heavy panting, very red or bluish gums, vomiting or staggering, wet the animal with cool, not cold, water and go straight to a vet.
- Winter: ask about coats and how to care for older or short-haired dogs that sleep outside.
Crossing into Argentina with your pet
Obligado borders Argentina along the Paraná River (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). To cross with a dog or cat, Argentina's SENASA requires an International Veterinary Certificate (CVI) issued by the origin country's veterinary authority, which in Paraguay is SENACSA, covering a health certificate, valid rabies vaccination and internal and external deworming (Argentina.gob.ar (opens in a new tab)). Book your vet early so everything is up to date before you request the certificate.
