In this guide
Coronel Oviedo works as a day trip from Asunción (132 km along Route PY02) or an overnight stop: the town squares and Casa de la Cultura in the morning, a farm such as Yvambopí or Alte Liebe in the afternoon, and, if you come in early October, the Virgen del Rosario feast and the Gran Festival del Ajo (garlic festival). Here is the plan, place by place.
What to see in central Coronel Oviedo
- Plaza José Segundo Decoud, Plaza de los Héroes and Plaza de la Libertad. The main squares, where local families gather (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). In 2025 the municipality announced a redesign of Plaza José Segundo Decoud and Plaza San Isidro as accessible spaces (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). Walk them early or at sunset; summer highs can hit 42 °C.
- Cathedral and its square. The town is the seat of the Diocese of Coronel Oviedo and its patron is the Virgen del Rosario; at the October feast there is a mass on the cathedral square and a procession through the main streets (Última Hora, 2023 (opens in a new tab)).
- Casa de la Cultura and Espacio Cultural GOBAU. Oviedo has four museums (three historical, one on Indigenous culture), and GOBAU is home to the Asociación Filarmónica Ovetense, with a conservatory and orchestra (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Check their social media for concerts.
Farms and countryside nearby
- Granja Ecoturística Yvambopí. In Potrero Ubaldina, about 1,500 m off km 152 of the PY02 and roughly 25 km from the centre. ABC Color (2021) (opens in a new tab) described a mini-zoo with 30+ animals, horse rides, rowing-boat fishing, a beach and camping; a 2016 piece said it opened Tuesday to Sunday (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Wikipedia lists it among the town's rural attractions (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- Granja Alte Liebe. In Aguapety, on Route PY08 towards Villarrica: pools, barbecue shelters, sports pitches, fishing ponds and farm animals, with cabins from G. 300,000 a day in 2021 (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab); Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
Both farms' details are a few years old, so message them before setting off to confirm they're open and what they charge.
Festivals: when to go
- Virgen del Rosario and the town's anniversary. Early October; the founding anniversary is 8 October (Infonegocios, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). In 2023 the municipality declared a local holiday for the feast (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
- Gran Festival del Ajo. The town was originally called Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Ajos, and the yearly festival brings traditional music, soloists and folk ballet during cultural week (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It runs at night at the Estadio Municipal El Cerrito; one past edition started at 21:00 and children under 10 got in free (Última Hora (opens in a new tab); ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Bring a jacket and buy tickets early.
- Football. Ovetense FC plays home games at Estadio Ovetenses Unidos (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
If it rains or it's too hot
D Shopping Coronel Oviedo, the town's first mall, sits on the highway at km 132 with ample parking (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). It opened in 2014 with a food court for about 250 people (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)) and turned ten in 2024 (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)). Good for lunch while the midday heat passes.
One- or two-day itinerary
- Half day: central squares and cathedral; lunch at D Shopping.
- Full day: add Yvambopí (about 25 km along PY02) or Alte Liebe (on PY08) in the afternoon.
- Weekend: stay the night and next day continue to Techapyrã in San José Apeputy, Caaguazú, about 3 km off the PY02: a "Jurassic park" with a train and dinosaur replicas, zip line and pool (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab); Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)). Or head south on PY08 to Villarrica, whose Parque Manuel Ortiz Guerrero has a lagoon with capybaras and ducks (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
To stay, two hotels with pools that appear in more than one source are Los Ayres Hotel on Avenida Mcal. Estigarribia (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab); Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)) and Sancer Hotel at km 130 of the PY02 (ABC Color (opens in a new tab); Booking (opens in a new tab)). Most guests are business travellers (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)), so book ahead on weekdays.
How to get to Coronel Oviedo
- By car: 132 km from Asunción on the PY02 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), a dual carriageway between Ypacaraí and Caaguazú (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). In Oviedo it crosses the PY08, which runs north to Santaní and south to Villarrica, Caazapá and Itapúa. Paraguay's highway patrol applies zero tolerance for alcohol (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
- By bus: Coronel Oviedo has a municipal bus terminal with heavy traffic to Asunción and Ciudad del Este. It gets packed over the year-end holidays (Última Hora, 2016 (opens in a new tab)), so buy tickets early around public holidays.
