In this guide
In Coronel Oviedo, choose your hotel by the road you are taking next: Route PY02 if you are heading to or from Asunción or Ciudad del Este, avenida Mariscal Estigarribia (the urban stretch of PY08) to be near downtown, or a rural guesthouse outside town for a pool and greenery. The city is 132 km from Asunción and a junction of inland routes (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), so most guests come for work and stay one or two nights.
On the highway or near the centre?
- On Route PY02: handy if you are passing through to Ciudad del Este or returning to Asunción, and you leave early without downtown traffic. The trade-off can be lorry noise.
- On avenida Mcal. Estigarribia (PY08): between the main roundabout and the microcentro, close to shops and errands.
- Out of town: quieter, with large grounds and a pool, but you need a car.
Hotels you can compare (two sources each)
All appear in an ABC Color article from February 2022 (opens in a new tab) on hotels with pools and barbecue areas, plus one more source:
- Hotel San Andrés – on the Mcal. Estigarribia dual carriageway, about 400 m from the main roundabout towards the centre. ABC counted 29 rooms (single to suite), an event hall, private parking and a pool. Booking (opens in a new tab) lists a garden, room service, 24-hour front desk and Wi-Fi.
- Sancer Hotel – at km 130 of Route PY02, on 5 wooded hectares with a 900 m walking path and a pool (ABC). Booking (opens in a new tab) lists a garden, terrace, free private parking and breakfast.
- Los Ayres Hotel – on Mcal. Estigarribia, about 10 blocks from the roundabout and 2 km from the microcentro, with 16 rooms, a pool and a barbecue area (ABC). Open since 2011, aimed at business travellers, with pool and breakfast included in the rate (InfoNegocios, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
- Hotel Rural Jerutí – about 400 m from km 138 of Route PY08, 3 km from town, on 8 hectares with a pool, barbecue area and pitch; ABC reported it also took day visitors. Expedia (opens in a new tab) describes it as a B&B with a restaurant, seasonal pool and free parking.
ABC's rates date from 2022, so ask for a current price on WhatsApp before booking.
Looking for Hotel Bertea or Hotel Marista? Both appear in the list of Coronel Oviedo hotels published by the Caaguazú Governorate (archived copy) (opens in a new tab). Hotel Bertea is on Route PY02 at km 130, as its Facebook page (opens in a new tab) also states. Hotel Marista has its own Facebook page (opens in a new tab) in Coronel Oviedo; ask for the exact location and rate before booking.
When to book ahead
InfoNegocios reports that most visitors come on business and that summer is the busiest season, with weddings, graduations and company year-end dinners held in Oviedo because it is close to Asunción (InfoNegocios, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). If you travel in November or December, book early, especially for weekends.
What to ask before paying a deposit
- Parking: InfoNegocios noted it is scarce among the city's hotels. Ask whether it is enclosed and fits a pickup or work vehicle.
- Breakfast time: if you leave before dawn for Ciudad del Este or the north, ask whether they can serve something earlier.
- Noise: if the hotel is on the highway, ask for a room at the back.
- Pool: at some hotels it is included in the rate; at others access depends on the season. Check if you travel with children.
- Invoice: if you travel for work, give your company's tax number (RUC) when booking.
If you stay an extra day
Coronel Oviedo is a base for onward travel: north on PY08 to Santaní and on to Concepción or Pedro Juan Caballero; south to Villarrica, Caazapá and Itapúa (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). In town you can walk the José Segundo Decoud, Héroes and Libertad squares.
