Ciudad del Este is more than shopping: you can walk around Lago de la República, spend an afternoon in Itaipú's linear park, tour the Itaipú dam (free, with a booking) and see the Saltos del Monday waterfalls in neighbouring Presidente Franco. Things to do in central Ciudad del Este
Lago de la República. The city's classic outing, a few blocks from the microcentro. It has a 4 km walking and cycling loop, playgrounds, an outdoor gym and an amphitheatre for events, according to ABC Color (opens in a new tab). Go early or near sunset; midday heat is harsh.
Museo El Mensú. On the Municipalidad grounds, in the house that was the first town hall. It holds old photos, pioneers' belongings and the founding charter. ABC (2022) lists it as open Monday to Friday, 7:00 to 13:00, so plan it for the morning.
Barrio Obrero murals. The city's first neighbourhood has an open-air route of historical murals and restored old houses. It is an easy walk and pairs well with the museum.
Places of worship. The Arab mosque, the Cathedral, Parroquia San Lucas and the mural at Parroquia Espíritu Santo make up a religious architecture circuit, and a Buddhist temple opens on weekends. Avoid service times and dress modestly.
Parks and river for the afternoon
Parque Lineal Manuel Ortiz Guerrero. Run by Itaipú in Área Habitacional N.º 1, with shaded trails and paved paths. Families choose it because it feels safe. ABC (2022) listed it as open daily, 8:00 to 21:00.
Costanera Ñande Renda. At Km 8 Acaray, on Lake Acaray, about 10 km from the microcentro. It has an artificial beach, amphitheatre, skate park, beach volleyball courts, playgrounds and a bike lane. The summer weekend plan.
Catamaran trip on the Paraná. A scenic boat ride with lunch, drinks and live music on board. Check departures and prices with the operator before you go.
Itaipú and Hernandarias (15 km away)
Itaipú dam. Guided tours of the power plant start at the Visitor Reception Centre in Hernandarias, just before the main access gate. Entry is free, but you need to book by phone on (061) 599-8040, by email at cturistico@itaipu.gov.py or through the Ib-tur app, according to ABC Color (opens in a new tab). Bring ID.
Iluminación Monumental. A night light show on the dam. ABC (2022) listed it on Fridays and Saturdays from 19:30, also by booking.
Museo de la Tierra Guaraní. 7 km from Ciudad del Este at Itaipú's Environmental Centre, an interactive museum on Guaraní culture and local wildlife.
Costanera de Hernandarias. On the Itaipú lake, with walking paths, a bike lane and catamaran rides.

Presidente Franco: Monday Falls and the Triple Frontier
Saltos del Monday. 3 km from central Presidente Franco, the town right next to Ciudad del Este to the south. Three drops of about 40 metres, with viewpoints, zip line, tree-top course and a panoramic lift that costs extra. Última Hora (2018) gave daily hours from 7:00, until 15:30 in winter and 19:00 in summer. Bring cash.
Hito de las Tres Fronteras. The viewpoint where the Paraná and Iguazú rivers meet, with Brazil and Argentina across the water. The Paraguayan side still has few facilities, so do not plan to eat there.
Monumento Científico Moisés Bertoni. A museum on the Swiss scientist, about 16 km south of Presidente Franco. Open Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays.
A half-day, one-day or weekend plan
- Half day: Museo El Mensú in the morning, the Barrio Obrero murals, then Lago de la República before lunch.
- One day: Monday Falls in the morning, lunch downtown, the linear park in the afternoon and, on a Friday or Saturday, the Iluminación Monumental with your booking made.
- Weekend: add the Itaipú tour and the Museo de la Tierra Guaraní on one day, and the Triple Frontier landmark plus the Bertoni museum on the other.
Getting to Ciudad del Este
From Asunción it is 327 km on Route PY02. Buses from Asunción's main bus terminal take about 5 to 6 hours depending on the company and stops. From Foz do Iguaçu you cross the Friendship Bridge; on shopping days it gets congested, so set off early.
