In this guide
A night out in Concepción starts early and by the river: sunset from the old port's pier, a walk along Avenida Agustín Fernando de Pinedo to the María Auxiliadora statue, then pizza, sharing plates or drinks at resto-bars such as Il Palazzo, Pizzan Rock or El Sitio. For a longer night, aim for Friday and Saturday, or the week of Expo Concepción.
At sunset: the old port and the river
- Old port of Concepción. One of the most visited spots in town, facing Chaco'i island; the sunset from its pier is the city's classic photo (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). SENATUR also recommends the riverside for sunset (SENATUR (opens in a new tab)). Tip: arrive half an hour before sunset and bring insect repellent.
- Boat ride and crossing to Chaco'i (Isla Bonita). Boats leave from the old port; in 2023 the crossing cost G. 8,000, longer rides are priced separately and life jackets are required (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). On Sundays the island fills with families from early morning (Última Hora, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Tip: this is a daytime plan; ask the boatman when the last trip back leaves.
Note: the new riverside avenue has been under construction since April 2026 (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)), so expect machinery and closed stretches near the bank.
An evening walk on Avenida Pinedo
Avenida Agustín Fernando de Pinedo is the city's main axis and is pleasant once the heat drops (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)):
- María Auxiliadora monument. A 24-metre statue of the Virgin from 2002.
- María Auxiliadora church. A Salesian parish begun in 1900, with a clock brought from Italy.
- Open-air museum. The Ferrocarril del Norte locomotive, a 1913 steamroller, a Chaco War truck and other pieces displayed along the avenue.
- Golden dorado monument, honouring the town's fish-eating tradition.
Tip: pair the walk with dinner; many central places are a few blocks away.
Where to eat and drink
These places are listed in SENATUR's food directory for Concepción:
- Il Palazzo – Presidente Franco street. Artisan pizza and cocktails (SENATUR (opens in a new tab)). A good start to the night with friends.
- Pizzan Rock – devoted to rock culture, in a rustic, family-friendly setting (SENATUR (opens in a new tab)). Rock music without a club.
- El Sitio Resto-Bar – build your own pizzas and sharing platters (SENATUR (opens in a new tab)). Good for big groups.
- Colonial Resto Bar – Gral. José Eduvigis Díaz street; takes reservations (SENATUR (opens in a new tab)).
- Bar La Carreta – at Hotel Imperial, with a varied menu (SENATUR (opens in a new tab)). Handy if you are staying in the centre.
The directory's listed hours are generic, so message them on WhatsApp before going, especially on Sunday or Monday.
Clubs and late nights
Concepción has no fixed club district like Asunción: late nights happen at resto-bars that turn the music up after dinner and at weekend events. To find out which club is open that weekend, ask at your hotel or the bar where you eat, as names change often. Carry ID and arrange a trusted taxi back before you go out.
Busiest dates
- Expo Concepción – 31 August to 6 September 2026 at the Nanawa exhibition grounds, with local, national and international acts (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). The liveliest week of the year.
- City anniversary – 25 May, with the official event at the Teatro Municipal Prof. Pedro Alvarenga Caballero, and the closing parade on the last Sunday of May, 31 May in 2026 (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
- Summer – the river and Chaco'i island are busier at weekends (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)).
Getting there and around
From Asunción the fastest road is PY09 (Transchaco); from Pedro Juan Caballero take PY05 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). The centre is flat with short blocks, so you can walk or take a taxi between the port, Avenida Pinedo and the bars.
