In this guide
Entertainment in Concepción revolves around the Paraguay River: sunset from the Puerto Antiguo pier, a boat across to Chaco'i island and the festivals held right there, such as the Festival del Río Paraguay. Add a walk along Avenida Pinedo, the Museo del Cuartel, the late-August Expo and a Friday or Saturday night out, and your weekend is sorted.
The river: Puerto Antiguo, boats and Chaco'i island
- Puerto Antiguo (old port). One of the city's most visited spots, facing Chaco'i island, with the sunset everyone photographs from the pier (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Tip: arrive half an hour before sunset and bring insect repellent.
- "Río Mágico" boat rides and the Chaco'i crossing. Brightly painted boats leave from the port, crewed by boatmen trained by the volunteer firefighters and the regional tourism office; life jackets are compulsory. In 2023 the crossing cost G. 8,000 and longer rides were priced separately (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). On Sundays the island fills with families from early on (Última Hora, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Ask when the last boat back leaves.
Note: work on the new riverside promenade began in April 2026 (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)), so some stretches near the shore may be closed.
Festivals and dates to plan around
- Festival del Río Paraguay (Puerto Antiguo). Daytime fishing and water activities, food and crafts; at night, live bands. The 21st edition, which opened the city's festive May in 2026, was set for Saturday 2 May with music from 19:00 and G. 25,000 entry, run by the City Hall's culture office and the musicians' association (Concepción al Día (opens in a new tab)); bad weather pushed it to the Sunday (Concepción al Día (opens in a new tab)). The 2025 edition was in March (Última Hora, 2025 (opens in a new tab)), so the date moves; check the City Hall's social media.
- City anniversary (25 May). An official ceremony at the Teatro Municipal Profesor Pedro Alvarenga Caballero and, on the last Sunday of May, the civic, school, police and military parade the press calls "the longest in the country"; in 2026 it was on the 31st (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Get a spot on the route early.
- Expo Concepción. At the Nanawa showground, about 2.5 km north of the centre (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). The 2026 edition ran from 31 August to 6 September, organised by the ARP's Concepción branch, with local, national and international acts and family entertainment (Última Hora, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). The busiest week of the year.
Avenida Pinedo and the museums
- Avenida Agustín Fernando de Pinedo. The city's main axis doubles as an open-air museum: a Ferrocarril del Norte locomotive, a 1913 road roller, a Chaco War truck, the golden-fish monument and, at the end, the 24 m statue of María Auxiliadora (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Walk it once the heat drops.
- Museo del Cuartel de la Villa Real. At Mariscal Estigarribia and Carlos Antonio López, in the old barracks restored in 1998, with more than 400 objects and an 1864 carriage (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). A sacred-art museum sits next to the Cathedral. Check opening times before going.
Fishing and streams for the weekend
- Fishing: anglers set up on the Paraguay River at Itacuá and at San Lázaro, where the Apa joins it, and on the Ypané and Aquidabán rivers (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Respect the closed season: the one that began on 2 November 2025 banned fishing and selling fish, running until 31 January in waters shared with Brazil (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
- Streams for a swim: the Tagatiyá, Tagatiyamí and Tagatiyá Guasu in San Alfredo, cold and crystal clear, and the busy Paso Itá in Horqueta (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). A full-day trip: leave early and take everything you need.
Nightlife in Concepción
Music bars cluster on Avenida Pinedo and Calle Pedro Juan Caballero, in a compact, walkable centre (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). Friday, Saturday and Expo week are the big nights. Agree the taxi fare before getting in: outside Asunción there are no meters and fewer cabs (iExplore (opens in a new tab)). If you drive, Paraguay has zero tolerance: 0.400 mg/L of breath alcohol or more is already a criminal offence (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
When to go and how to get there
Summer highs can reach 42 °C and November to January is the wettest stretch (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), so do the centre in the morning or at dusk. From Asunción the fastest road is Route PY09 through the Chaco (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)); the bus from the terminal takes about 6 hours (Rome2Rio (opens in a new tab)).
