In this guide
The handiest place to stay in Concepción is the historic centre, between Avenida Pinedo and the old port: you can walk to the riverfront, museums and restaurants without a car. If you're travelling for work or driving, also look at hotels to the west or on the road to the bridge, and if your dates fall on the Expo or late May, book weeks ahead.
Which area to stay in
- Historic centre. It runs from Calle Mayor Julio Otaño to Juan Bautista Alberdi and from 14 de Mayo to the riverbank, and was declared cultural heritage in 2023 (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Many old mansions have been turned into hotels, and supply has grown in recent years. It's the best base for a few days of sightseeing: the centre is compact and walkable (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)).
- Near the port. Presidente Franco, the main shopping street, ends at the port (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). The old port is the city's most-visited spot for sunsets and boat trips (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)), so a hotel a few blocks away sorts out your evening plan.
- Avenida Pinedo. The main and longest avenue, with the María Auxiliadora monument and an open-air museum (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Handy if you arrive by bus: you can get off at the "la Avenida" stop and walk (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)).
- West side and bridge road. There are hotels towards the Route 5 roundabout and on the road to the Nanawa bridge, easier if you have a car (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)).
- Bus terminal. About eight blocks north of Presidente Franco, with cheap guesthouses around it (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). Fine for one night in transit.
Two well-known hotels to start comparing
- Concepción Palace Hotel. At Mariscal López 399, right downtown. Its Senatur listing shows a pool, free parking, Wi-Fi, air conditioning and breakfast included (Visit Paraguay (opens in a new tab)); Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab) calls it the most complete in town, with a business centre and restaurant. Suited to work trips.
- Hotel Puerto Seguro. Rustic style, in the historic centre, a few metres from the old port (Infonegocios, 2023 (opens in a new tab)); at Presidente Franco and Juan B. Otaño, with a pool and parking (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). For anyone who wants the river a block away.
For anything else, compare on two booking sites, read recent reviews and check the map pin is inside the centre if you plan to walk.
When hotels fill up
- Expo Concepción: in 2026 it ran from 31 August to 6 September at Campo Nanawa, with concerts and livestock business (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
- Festive May: the city's anniversary is 25 May, with a parade on the last Sunday of the month (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)), and the Festival del Río Paraguay at the old port opened the 2026 May celebrations (Concepción al Día (opens in a new tab)).
- Paracel works: in May 2026 port, power-line and access-road works began at Paso Horqueta for the country's largest private investment (Hoy (opens in a new tab)). More technicians and suppliers mean fewer free beds midweek, so don't assume a Tuesday will be easy.
What to ask before paying a deposit
- Working air conditioning. Summer highs reach about 42 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Ask whether the room has its own split unit and whether there's a backup generator.
- Secure parking, if you're driving from Asunción or Pedro Juan Caballero.
- Late arrival. The bus from Asunción takes about six hours (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab); Rome2rio (opens in a new tab)); give your arrival time and get confirmation someone will be at reception.
- Senatur registration. Places rented out regularly through platforms or social media must also be registered in Registur (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). If you rent a house or flat, ask for the registration number and a receipt.
- Payment. Check whether they take transfers, cards or QR; in April 2026, 7 out of 10 Bancard electronic payments were by QR (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Get the cancellation policy for the deposit in writing.
Getting there and around
From Asunción it's about 410 to 460 km depending on the route: via the Transchaco and the Nanawa bridge (Route PY09) or via Routes 3 and 5 (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab); Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Buses leave Asunción's terminal several times a day. Once in the centre you'll walk everywhere; for the terminal or the Expo, agree the taxi fare before getting in.
