Neighborhoods and errands in Asunción: Villa Morra and the centre

Group your errands into two loops, Villa Morra and the centre with Mercado 4, and keep ID or passport paperwork for another morning, before the heat.

Errands in Asunción work when you group them by area instead of crossing the city for each one. Plan two loops: Villa Morra and Aviadores del Chaco for malls, banks and anything that needs parking, and the centre with Mercado 4 for cheap goods, fresh produce and cash purchases. Keep paperwork such as an ID card or passport for a separate morning, and start early: the heat and the roadworks on Avenida Mariscal López decide how much you get done.

Loop 1: Villa Morra and Aviadores del Chaco

Villa Morra, in the city's north-east, is the shopping district around Avenida Mariscal López (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). One morning there covers most errands that need parking and air conditioning.

How to run it: start with whatever closes earliest (the bank, your phone company's service desk) and finish at the supermarket so frozen goods travel least.

Loop 2: the centre and Mercado 4

Mercado 4 (opens in a new tab) sits at Rodríguez de Francia and Perú in barrio Pettirossi and spills into San Roque, Ciudad Nueva and Pinozá. It is the place for fruit, vegetables, groceries, cheap clothes and cooked food.

For a full walk-through, see our Mercado 4 guide.

Paperwork: ID card and passport

The Police Identification Department's head office is on Avenida Boggiani at RI3 Ytororó. In March 2025 it took applications from 6:00 to 22:00 every day, and a passport cost G. 240,000, cash only (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Bring exact cash and do not combine it with other errands; arrive early and you are out before the worst heat.

Supermarkets: hours and holidays

According to the supermarket chamber Capasu, stores generally open Monday to Saturday 6:00 to 21:30 and Sunday 7:00 to 21:00; some chains stay open until 22:00 and hours vary by company (Prensa Mercosur, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). On national holidays such as 1 and 14 May, Easter week or 25 December (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), check your branch's hours the day before.

https://www.abc.com.py/negocios/2026/05/19/revolucion-de-los-pagos-digitales-7-de-cada-10-se-procesan-con-qr/ is already 68.1% of electronic payments, and 35% of https://www.abc.com.py/negocios/2026/05/19/revolucion-de-los-pagos-digitales-7-de-cada-10-se-procesan-con-qr/ transactions happen in supermarkets (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Still carry cash for the market and stalls. To compare chains, see our guide to supermarkets in Asunción.

Getting between the two loops

  • Mariscal López roadworks: the public works ministry is rebuilding 6.3 km of the avenue between Madame Lynch and the Yberá junction, with detours (Hoy, 2025 (opens in a new tab)), and in July 2026 began final paving between Cerro Porteño and Madame Lynch with a contraflow stretch (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). The city is also working on Mariscal López, España, San Martín and De la Victoria under Plan ASU 400 (Municipality of Asunción (opens in a new tab)). If you drive, do not combine both loops in one day.
  • By bus: the electric https://www.lanacion.com.py/pais/2026/02/18/linea-e2-de-buses-electricos-comenzo-a-circular-en-la-avenida-mariscal-lopez/ line runs from San Lorenzo to the Government Offices via Mariscal López and through Perú, Azara and General Díaz streets, 4:00 to 1:45 (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)), linking the Villa Morra corridor with the centre. In May 2026 the fare was G. 2,300 on standard buses and G. 3,400 on the higher-grade service (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
  • With shopping bags: take a ride-hailing car for the last leg rather than walking loaded.

When to go out in the heat

In summer the heat index tops 40 °C and storms are short and strong (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). The Health Ministry advises outdoor activity before 10:00 or after 17:00 (https://www.mspbs.gov.py/portal/34614/actividad-fisica-en-verano-recomendaciones-para-una-practica-segura.html (opens in a new tab)): do Mercado 4 and paperwork first thing, leave the malls for midday and carry water.
