To choose a bookstore in Capiatá, start with what you need: school supplies from your child's list, photocopies and printing for university, or a particular book. For supplies and copies, a shop in your neighbourhood or on Route PY02 usually does the job; for a specific title, message ahead with the exact name or ISBN and ask whether they have it or can order it. And if your child attends a public school, check what the Ministry of Education (MEC) kit includes first.
What kind of bookstore do you need?
In Paraguay a "librería" is usually a stationery shop. In Capiatá you'll find three kinds:
- School-supply shop: notebooks, folders, pencils, craft materials, covers and everything on the school list.
- Copy and print shop: photocopies, binding, colour printing, sometimes laminating. Ask which file formats they accept and how fast they deliver.
- Textbooks and general books: less common. For a specific title, send a photo of the cover or the ISBN and ask whether they can order it and how long it takes.
Many shops do all three. What differs is stock and speed.
What's in the MEC kit, and what do you still need to buy?
Public and state-subsidised schools receive supply kits from the MEC. For 2026 there were 23 kinds of individual kits by school level (opens in a new tab), each in a bag with a list of its contents, plus a QR code and WhatsApp numbers to report missing items.
Before you go shopping:
- Compare the school's list with the list on the bag and buy only what's missing.
- In 2023 the MEC asked public-school teachers and heads not to demand supplies already in the kit, nor photocopies or notebooks (opens in a new tab), and asked private and subsidised schools to give families time to buy.
- If the kit hasn't arrived or is incomplete, report it through the QR code or WhatsApp number on the bag before buying everything again.
When are bookstores busiest?
The peak is back-to-school. In 2026 schools opened on 10 February for administrative work and classes began on 23 February, according to the MEC calendar (opens in a new tab). The two weeks before are the busiest.
Other busy spells:
- After the winter break, which in 2026 ran from 13 to 23 July, when second-semester lists come out.
- End of the school year: classes end on 30 November, with final projects, folders and last-minute copies.
If you can, buy the full list in January or early February, and leave a day's margin for photocopies during deadline weeks.
Where should you look in Capiatá?
Route PY02, known as Mariscal Estigarribia, runs through the city and is where most shops are; the Plaza Central sits on the highway, opposite the municipality (opens in a new tab). A shop on the highway is handy if you're already passing, but check which side it's on: crossing PY02 at rush hour can take longer than the shopping.
Capiatá has more than thirty barrios, such as Loma Clavel, Kennedy, Laurelty and Santa Rosa de Lima, and most have a neighbourhood bookstore near the schools. For odd items, that's enough.
If you're at university, the city has campuses of UTIC, UPAP, UNIGRAN and UNISAL, among others, according to Wikipedia (opens in a new tab). Copy shops near those campuses are set up for course notes and binding. Ask them to keep your file so you don't have to resend it every time.
What to ask before you pay
- Total price for the list: many shops will put together the whole list and send you the price on WhatsApp. Ask which brands they used, because that's where the total changes.
- Invoice: according to SEDECO (opens in a new tab), the consumer protection office, every sale of goods and services must come with an invoice, and sale signs must show the previous price, the discount percentage and the current cash price in guaraníes.
- Payment: QR now accounts for 68.1% of electronic payments (opens in a new tab) in Paraguay, according to Bancard. Still ask whether they take cards or bank transfers, especially in small neighbourhood shops.
- Copies and printing: price per page in black and white and in colour, whether binding costs extra and when it'll be ready.
