In this guide
For the weekly shop in Presidente Franco, pick your supermarket by where you live and how you move around: if you work in Ciudad del Este, choose one on your way home; if not, the nearest one on your side of the Monday River. Do the big shop once a week with a list, and top up bread, milk and vegetables at a neighbourhood supermarket or despensa (corner store).
Shop in Franco or in Ciudad del Este?
Presidente Franco borders Ciudad del Este to the north, and the boundary between the two cities is barely visible (opens in a new tab). You reach it via Route PY02 and then a stretch of PY07 from the km 4 roundabout. Many residents work in CDE, so the real question is where it's easiest to stop.
- Driving home from CDE in the evening: do the big shop at a store on your route, on your side of the road, so you don't have to double back with a full boot.
- Working in Franco: there's no need to cross into CDE for a few items; your local store saves you the traffic.
- Living south of the Monday: the river splits the district, and most people live on the north side (opens in a new tab). Factor in the crossing and get everything in one trip.
When to go
- Weekday mornings are usually the calmest, with fresh produce restocked and short queues.
- Weekends: the city gets 2,700 to 3,000 tourists a week, mostly at weekends (opens in a new tab), largely for the Monday Falls (Saltos del Monday). If you live near the park or the road to the falls, do the big shop Monday to Friday.
- Mid-October: the city's patron saint and founding day is 13 October, honouring the Virgin of Fátima (opens in a new tab). Stock up beforehand.
- Summer: highs reach 38 °C (opens in a new tab). Pick up dairy, meat and frozen food last and bring a cool bag.
Comparing prices, and what to do if the till price is wrong
- Compare price per kilo or litre, not per pack.
- On promotions, the sign must show the previous price, the discount percentage and the current price (opens in a new tab). If something's missing, ask before you pay.
- If the till charges more than the shelf price, the consumer agency Sedeco advises complaining to the store manager first; if it isn't fixed, photograph the price tag and the invoice and file a complaint on Sedeco's website (opens in a new tab).
- Always take your invoice (factura): every sale must be invoiced (opens in a new tab).
Paying: QR, card, cash or Pix?
QR is now standard at the supermarket: in April 2026, 35% of QR transactions on the Bancard network were at supermarkets (opens in a new tab). Bank discounts depend on the day and the card, so check your bank's app before a big shop to see which day and which chain your discount applies to, and whether it has a cap.
For Brazilian shoppers, since 2024 stores on the Bancard network can accept Pix from accounts in reais (opens in a new tab). Not every store offers it, so ask at the till before your items are scanned and check the exchange rate used.
Coming from Foz do Iguaçu over the Integration Bridge
The Integration Bridge (Puente de la Integración) opened to the public in December 2025 (opens in a new tab). Since 14 September 2026, according to the joint Paraguay-Brazil commission, private cars may cross from 7:00 to 13:00, only for residents of Ciudad del Este, Presidente Franco, Hernandarias and Foz, carrying the border-resident transit document (Documento de Tránsito Vecinal Fronterizo) (opens in a new tab). On 18 September 2026 those rules were unchanged (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)); check before crossing in case they change. Goods clearance is not enabled on that bridge, except for items considered subsistence goods under the Mercosur border-towns agreement. If you're planning a big shop, work out how you'll get back first.
On the Brazilian side, two rules apply:
- Allowance: US$500 per person every 30 days by land (opens in a new tab), tracked by the Receita Federal nationwide.
- Food: since 4 February 2026, fresh fruit and vegetables, honey and non-canned pork products (opens in a new tab) are banned in travellers' baggage.
Quick list before you go
- Choose a main store for the weekly shop and a backup near work.
- Keep reusable bags and a cool bag in the car.
- Check your receipt before leaving the store.
