For the weekly shop in Coronel Oviedo, pick a supermarket with its own car park outside the busy centre, and leave fruit and vegetables for the Mercado Municipal or a producers' fair if they are on your way. Pay by QR or with whichever card has a discount that day, and check opening hours before you go, especially on public holidays and during the October festivities.
Big supermarket, local shop or market?
- Big supermarket: for the weekly or monthly shop, with meat, dairy, cleaning products and frozen food in one trip. Parking and stock of your usual items matter most.
- Neighbourhood autoservicio or despensa: for bread, milk or whatever you forgot. Quicker, and you do not have to move the car.
- Mercado Municipal: for fruit, vegetables and bulk prices. Walk or ride a motorbike if you can (see below).
How to shop at the Mercado Municipal without a parking fine
Parking around Mercado Municipal Nº 1 is the hardest in town: in November 2024 ABC reported that finding a space there was almost impossible and shoppers were leaving cars several blocks away (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Since May 2024 the municipality has used tow trucks and wheel clamps against illegal parking, with fines of G. 515,455 to G. 1,015,455 plus G. 500,000 for towing (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
What to do:
- Park further away and walk, or go early on a weekday.
- Do not stop on a corner or in front of a driveway "just for a minute": you can still be clamped.
- Bring sturdy bags or a trolley, as pavements are often taken up by stalls (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
Are there producers' fairs in Coronel Oviedo?
Yes, seasonally. In 2023, for example, a strawberry fair ran on Fridays in front of the municipal building, with women from five farmers' committees selling fresh strawberries, juices, jams and sweets for as long as the season lasted (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). If you like buying direct, ask at the municipality or on local social media whether this year's fair has started.
How to pay and save at the till
- QR: now 68.1% of electronic payments in Paraguay, and supermarkets account for 35% of all QR transactions, according to Bancard (ABC Color, May 2026 (opens in a new tab)). It is almost always accepted.
- Bank discounts: banks often run supermarket discounts on a fixed weekday, with specific cards and a monthly cap (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Check your card's day before the big shop.
- Shelf price vs till price: the law requires prices to be shown with taxes included (Law 1334, art. 10 (opens in a new tab)), and gaps between shelf and till prices are among the complaints Sedeco receives (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Check your receipt before leaving and ask for a correction on the spot.
- Invoice: ask for a factura with your RUC or ID number if you need one; every sale must be invoiced (Sedeco via ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
Shopping in the heat
Summer in Coronel Oviedo reaches 42 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Bring a cool bag for meat and frozen food, pick them up last, and do not leave shopping in a parked car while you run another errand.
When is it busiest?
- Long weekends and Mother's Day: in May 2024 the market and the city's shopping centres were packed (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
- City anniversary and Virgen del Rosario in October: the city holds a procession and the municipality usually declares a local day off (Última Hora, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Check hours before heading out.
- Just passing through: Coronel Oviedo sits where PY02 meets PY08 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). If you only need water and road snacks, a shop on the highway saves you driving into the centre.
