For a meal in Concepción, start in the historic centre near the Agustín Fernando de Pinedo plaza, or head toward the old port if you want dinner close to the river and the sunset. Decide first what you are after, whether river fish, grilled beef or something quick, and message ahead to check hours and space, especially at weekends.

Where are the places to eat in Concepción?

Concepción is a flat city of short blocks, so almost everything is a few minutes away by car or motorbike.

  • Historic centre: the old mansions and plazas of the downtown grid hold most of the lunch and dinner spots. This is the area to walk between places and decide on the spot.
  • Old port area: one of the city's most visited places, with sunset views over the Paraguay River from the pier, according to ABC Color (opens in a new tab). It works well for a walk at dusk followed by dinner.
  • Along Route PY05: the road in from Pedro Juan Caballero and Horqueta. If you arrive after a long drive, eat before heading into the centre.

What should I order?

The city is surrounded by rivers, with the Paraguay to the west, the Ypané to the south and the Aquidabán to the north, and fishing is part of local life. River fish shows up on many menus, breaded, grilled or as a soup.

Check the date. During the fishing ban, which in 2025 ran from November to December on waters shared with Argentina and to the end of January on waters shared with Brazil, the environment ministry (MADES) bans catching and selling (opens in a new tab) dorado, pacú, surubí and other species. In those months, ask where the fish on the menu comes from.

Concepción is also cattle country, so grilled beef is a safe bet. For something lighter, sopa paraguaya (a savoury corn bread), chipa and chipa guasu are on almost every table.

Where to have dinner in Concepción, and when?

Heat sets the pace. The average temperature is around 27 °C and summer highs can top 40 °C, according to Wikipedia (opens in a new tab). In the hot months people eat late and look for outdoor tables or good fans.

  • Many small places open for lunch, close in the afternoon and reopen at night. If you arrive mid-afternoon, ask first.
  • For Friday and Saturday nights, send a WhatsApp message with the number of people and your arrival time.
  • If you want an outdoor table, ask when you book: pavement tables fill first once it cools down.

Which dates fill the restaurants?

At certain times of year the city gets many visitors and booking ahead pays off:

  • Expo Concepción (formerly Expo Norte): the region's livestock and trade fair. In 2026 it ran from 31 August to 6 September at the Nanawa exhibition grounds.
  • The patron saint festival of the Immaculate Conception on 8 December.
  • Summer, when Chaco'i island, opposite the old port, gets busier and visitors add the river to their outing.

How do I pay?

Bancard's QR code is used across the country, and restaurants are among the businesses that accept it most. You pay with your bank or wallet app, and many places also take cards. Still carry some guaraníes in cash for a small bar, a neighbourhood sandwich spot or the boat to Chaco'i.

What to do before heading out

  • Pick two places in the same area, centre or port, so you have a backup a few blocks away.
  • Ask whether portions are for sharing: in many places one dish feeds two.
  • If you are with children or a vegetarian, check options first, as menus tend to revolve around meat and fish.
  • After dinner downtown, the old port pier is close for a short walk.
