In this guide
To choose an auto repair shop in Presidente Franco, pin down the fault first and find a shop that specialises in it, on your side of town or in Ciudad del Este if that's closer. Get a written diagnosis and quote before approving the work, and insist they call you before any extra job: Paraguay's consumer law requires it.
What kind of shop do you need?
The right taller saves you paying for two diagnoses:
- General mechanics: engine, clutch, suspension, brakes, steering.
- Electrics and fuel injection: car won't start, cuts out, or shows a dashboard warning. Ask if they have a scanner for your make.
- Radiators and air conditioning: overheating, coolant leaks, AC not cooling.
- Bodywork and paint: dents, scratches, insurance jobs.
- Lube shop, tyres and alignment: oil, filters, tyres, balancing.
- Motorcycles: many car shops won't take them; find a motorbike shop and ask about parts for your model.
- Dealer service: if the vehicle is under factory warranty, start there.
Presidente Franco or Ciudad del Este?
Presidente Franco borders Ciudad del Este to the north, and the two are so joined up that they share services of every kind (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Most people live north of the Monday River, inside the metro area. In practice, the nearest shop may sit just across the city line.
- If the car still runs, pick a shop on your daily route so you can drop it off in the morning and collect it on the way back.
- If it overheats, loses brakes or makes a loud noise, don't take it onto route PY07 or PY02: find something close or call a tow truck.
- If you live in one of the district's rural areas, ask whether the shop collects vehicles or whether a tow is simpler.
The new bridge and traffic
Since 14 September 2026, the Integration Bridge to Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, has been open to private cars from 7:00 to 13:00, only for residents of Ciudad del Este, Presidente Franco, Hernandarias and Foz, with every occupant holding the Border Neighbour Transit Document (Joint Commission, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Smaller cargo trucks and empty lorries also use it at set times, and residents warned that local streets weren't built for the load (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
For you that means heavier traffic near the bridge approaches when you drop the car off, and, if your vehicle has Brazilian plates, asking up front whether the shop can get parts for that version.
How to get a quote that holds up
Paraguay's consumer protection law, Law 1334/98 (opens in a new tab), says a service provider must tell you, among other things, the materials to be used, the price including taxes and payment method, and how long the quote is valid (art. 15). If an unplanned job or cost comes up mid-repair, they must tell you before doing it (art. 16). Any warranty offered must be in writing (art. 11).
So ask for:
- A written diagnosis, and whether it's charged separately or deducted if they do the repair.
- Parts and labour itemised, with brand and whether each part is original, aftermarket or used.
- A completion date, and a call before anything you didn't approve.
- A written warranty on labour and parts.
- The old parts back, to see they were really replaced.
For an expensive job, compare two quotes from shops with the same speciality.
Rain and heat: what to check
Presidente Franco has a humid subtropical climate with slightly more rain than Ciudad del Este, about 1,718 mm a year (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Before summer, check radiator, hoses, cooling fan, battery and AC. In heavy rain, don't drive through flooded streets; if the engine died in water, don't restart it, call a tow.
When you collect the car
- A legal invoice (factura) itemising parts and labour: you'll need it for any warranty claim.
- A short test drive with the mechanic to confirm the fault is gone.
- Mileage and next service date noted down.
If the repair failed and the shop won't respond, you can complain to the Consumer Protection Secretariat (SEDECO), using the invoice and written quote as evidence.
FAQ
How do I find a good auto repair shop near me in Presidente Franco?
Look for one with the speciality you need, close to your route, even if it's on the Ciudad del Este side. Get the diagnosis, quote and warranty in writing.
Can a shop charge me for work I didn't approve?
Law 1334/98 (art. 16) says an unplanned job or cost must be communicated to you before it is done. A written quote makes that easy to prove.
Can I drive to Foz over the Integration Bridge?
Since 14 September 2026, private cars may cross 7:00 to 13:00, only residents of Ciudad del Este, Presidente Franco, Hernandarias and Foz, with the Border Neighbour Transit Document for everyone in the car.
What if the shop won't honour its warranty?
Claim with the invoice and the written warranty. If that fails, you can go to Paraguay's Consumer Protection Secretariat (SEDECO).
