To choose a hair salon or barber in San Bernardino, think about the date first: from December to mid-February the lake town fills up with people from Greater Asunción, and a same-day slot that is easy in April can mean waiting several days in January. Then decide on the service: a cut or beard trim is quick, but colour, sculpted nails or styling for an event should be booked early, with the full price confirmed in writing.

High season or the rest of the year?

San Bernardino is about 50 km from Asunción on the shore of Lake Ypacaraí, and its peak season runs from December to mid-February, when many Greater Asunción families holiday there (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). That changes how you book:

  • In summer: book several days ahead, especially for Fridays and Saturdays. Saturday is already the busiest day in the trade nationwide: one salon interviewed by InfoNegocios sees more than 120 clients that day (InfoNegocios (opens in a new tab)).
  • The rest of the year: the town no longer lives on summer alone. Since the pandemic many people from Asunción have moved to San Bernardino, gated communities have grown and some businesses now stay open all year (InfoNegocios (opens in a new tab)). On weekdays outside the season, a same-day appointment is easier.

Driving in from Asunción for your appointment

Traffic can cost you your slot. Over the long weekend at the end of September 2026 there was heavy traffic on Ruta PY02 from the San Bernardino turn-off to near the Ypacaraí toll (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)), and in early October major jams were reported at the toll on the Ecovía road linking Luque and San Bernardino, and at the km 48 toll on the PY02 (Hoy (opens in a new tab)). So:

  • If you can, book mid-morning on a weekday.
  • For Fridays, public holidays or the start of a long weekend, leave early or tell the salon on WhatsApp you might be late.
  • If you live in San Bernardino, use weekdays for long treatments and leave weekends to visitors.

Hair salon, barber or nail salon

  • Barber: men's cuts and beards; many work first come, first served, but message ahead in high season.
  • Hair salon: cuts, colour, highlights, straightening, styling.
  • Nails: ask whether they do gel, acrylic or regular polish and how long each service takes.
  • Hair or make-up for an event: ask for a trial first and check whether they can come to you.

If a salon offers injectable Botox or fillers, walk away: the Paraguayan Society of Aesthetic Medicine says those treatments must be done by a doctor in a licensed clinic, not in salons or at home (La Nación (opens in a new tab)).

What to ask before booking

Send a photo of your hair today and one of what you want by WhatsApp or Instagram, then ask for:

  • Photos of similar work. Instagram is the main shop window for salons in Paraguay (InfoNegocios (opens in a new tab)); check that posts are recent.
  • The full price. Paraguay's consumer law (Ley 1334) requires service providers to state the price including taxes and the payment method, and to tell you about any cost not in the quote before it is incurred (Ley 1334/98 (opens in a new tab)).
  • Which product they use for straightening or bleaching and whether it has a health registration. In October 2026 DINAVISA asked the public to check the registration and origin of products before any aesthetic procedure (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
  • Deposit and cancellation rules, especially in high season, when a missed slot is hard to replace.

Paying

  • Ask whether they take QR or bank transfer as well as cash. In April 2026 QR made up 68.1% of electronic payments processed by Bancard (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
  • For an expensive job, ask for an invoice (factura): it helps if you need to complain.

Signs you have found your place

  • They listen before cutting and tell you honestly whether what you want suits your hair.
  • Tools and towels are clean between clients.
  • They keep to your time slot, even in January, or warn you early if they are running late.
  • They explain how to protect colour or straightening from summer sun and lake water.
