In this guide
The best family plan in San Lorenzo starts at the Ciclovía, the city's big park next to the UNA university campus, with inclusive playgrounds, a lagoon and a bike loop. On a weekday morning add the National Museum of Natural History; if it's too hot or raining, the historic centre or a mall will save the afternoon.
Where can kids play outdoors?
1. Ciclovía de San Lorenzo. The city's main park sits in the Villa Universitaria area, right next to the Universidad Nacional de Asunción (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It has a loop of about 2 km with a bike lane and a walking lane, sports courts, exercise machines, an artificial lagoon and a waterfall. After the renovation, Última Hora (opens in a new tab) reports two play areas: a fenced one accessible to children in wheelchairs, with climbing towers, a seesaw, a merry-go-round and swings, and a quieter one away from the noise, designed for neurodivergent kids.
- Entrance: the long-standing access is on calle Coronel Romero (ABC (opens in a new tab)).
- Tip: bring bikes or skates; the loop is flat and lit. In summer go early or around sunset, with water and hats.
2. Municipal Cycling School. It runs at the same Ciclovía and, when it opened, was free for kids aged 3 to 16, including those who can't ride yet (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). Each child brings a bike, helmet and elbow and knee pads. Ask the municipality about current days before you go.
3. Parque Rayadito. A smaller park in the La Victoria neighbourhood, handy for a short outing if you live nearby.
What's a good indoor plan on a weekday morning?
4. National Museum of Natural History of Paraguay. On Ruta Mariscal Estigarribia, km 13.5, corner of Avenida del Agrónomo, opposite the UNA, open Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 14:00 (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)); it sits inside the Ministry of Agriculture grounds (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Collections cover birds, fish, bats, reptiles and plants, a hit with animal-mad kids.
- Getting there: several bus lines run along the highway, including 11, 29, 45 and 165.
- Tip: pair it with the Ciclovía in the same university area. It is closed on weekends.
What can you do downtown with kids?
5. Cathedral and Plaza Cerro Corá. In the San Pedro neighbourhood, the neo-Gothic cathedral has a clock tower whose clock came from Asunción's cathedral in 1884 (ABC (opens in a new tab)). The square in front is good for a short, shady stroll.
6. San Lorenzo pedestrian street. In front of the town hall, with monuments and shops; easy with a stroller.
7. Paseo Bicentenario and the Tren Lechero replica. Opposite the Municipal Theatre stands a replica of the historic "milk train", a favourite photo stop for kids (ABC (opens in a new tab)).
8. Tren Lechero Station Cultural Centre. On calle España at Avenida Defensores del Chaco, in the rebuilt old station of the San Lorenzo train. Check its social media for exhibitions or workshops.
9. Municipal Market. Also in the historic centre and the area's biggest market: fruit, cheese, clothes. With small kids, skip the morning rush.
What if it rains or it's too hot?
10. Pinedo Shopping. Its 2024 expansion announced Skygames, a family play area of more than 1,300 m² (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)).
11. San Lorenzo Shopping. At km 15 of Ruta PY02, with a food court and a four-screen cinema, according to Infonegocios (2017) (opens in a new tab). Check showtimes before leaving.
A mall covers lunch, toilets and air conditioning in one stop, so it is the easiest plan B.
When does the city celebrate?
12. San Lorenzo's patron saint festival (10 August). It is the city's patron saint day and anniversary. In 2025 there was a fair outside the town hall, a firefighters' parade, music on the pedestrian street, a serenade at Pinedo Shopping and a Sunday procession (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). Great if your kids enjoy a crowd; with a stroller, go early in the morning.
How do you get there from Asunción without a car?
The E1 electric bus links downtown Asunción with San Lorenzo via Ruta PY02 and Avenida del Agrónomo, ending on calle Azara. It runs 05:00 to 23:00, the fare was G. 3,400 in early 2026, and it has a ramp and wheelchair space, so strollers fit easily (La Nación (opens in a new tab)).
A ready-made day: morning at the museum (weekdays) or the Ciclovía, lunch at a mall, and a sunset walk around the square and the Tren Lechero.
