  7. Getting around

For a family day in Luque, build the plan around three places: Ñu Guasu park in the morning, the CONMEBOL Museum (free, booking required) for football-mad kids, and the Peatonal Histórica in the town centre late in the afternoon. Everything is a few minutes from Silvio Pettirossi airport and from Asunción, so it fits into a relaxed day, even on a layover. Here is what each place offers, when to go and where to eat.

Morning outdoors: Ñu Guasu park

One of the largest parks in the metro area, with tennis, basketball and football courts and the Las Residentas monument (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It has walking, running and cycling circuits, shaded rest areas, public toilets, cold-water fountains every kilometre, an ambulance and a first-aid post; on the 1 May 2025 holiday it opened from 5:00 to 21:30 (Hoy, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).

  • When: early, before the sun gets strong; in summer, midday is for indoor plans.
  • Bring: bikes or scooters for the kids, hats, sunscreen and plenty of water.

For young football fans: the CONMEBOL Museum

The South American Football Museum sits next to CONMEBOL's headquarters near the airport (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It displays shirts from Libertadores, Sudamericana and Women's Libertadores champions and items linked to Pelé, Maradona, Messi and other legends. It opens Monday to Friday 8:00–18:00 and Saturday 9:00–12:00; entry is free with advance booking at conmebol.com/museo-conmebol (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).

  • Tip: book before you leave home, as you will not get in without it. It is the ideal plan for a rainy or very hot day.

Afternoon in the centre: pedestrian street, shrine and plaza

  • Peatonal Histórica: on Mariscal López between Teniente Herrero Bueno and Rosario, with old buildings, places to eat and street performances (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It is car-free, so kids can walk freely.
  • Virgen del Rosario shrine and Plaza General Aquino: the patron saint's church and the main square with General Aquino's mausoleum, steps from the Peatonal (same source).
  • Filigree and harp workshops: Luque is known for gold and silver filigree jewellery and for harps and guitars (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)); jewellery workshops clustered on Avenida General Aquino (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Go in daytime, when they are open, and let the kids watch the craft.

A neighbourhood playground

If you are staying near Cañada San Rafael, Plaza Las Golondrinas has a children's playground, football and beach-volleyball courts, exercise equipment, a walking path and a garden, according to La Nación's (2021) (opens in a new tab) report on its opening. A short afternoon plan without driving into the centre.

Live sport: Olympic Park and Sportivo Luqueño

Where to eat and dates to note

Plaza Madero, on Autopista Silvio Pettirossi at Torokay on the way to the airport, opened with evening-hours restaurants, about 300 parking spaces and a 24-hour supermarket (Hoy, 2021 (opens in a new tab); La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). Handy for a quick family meal or before a flight.

Getting around

The airport is at the entrance to Luque, about 10 minutes from Asunción (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). Inside the city, the main roads are Avenida General Elizardo Aquino, Autopista Ñu Guasu and Avenida Las Residentas (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). An order that works: Ñu Guasu early, the museum before noon, lunch, a rest during the heat, and the Peatonal at sunset.
