The best all-round entertainment in Ñemby is Cerro Ñemby: trails, sports courts, a kids' play area and an emerald lagoon, about 15 km from Asunción. For the rest of the day, Ñemby has plazas with a skate park, museums, a themed restaurant for kids and local football at weekends. Here is what to do, where and when.
What to do at Cerro Ñemby
The hill is the city's main public park, in the Caaguazú neighbourhood about 1,450 metres from the centre (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). According to ABC Color (2025) (opens in a new tab), it opens 7:00 to 20:00 and covers about 70 hectares of forest, lagoon, camping area and sports space.
- Hike to the top: paths and walkways to the summit, with views over central Ñemby and Route PY01. A trail of about 7 km opened in 2025 (Última Hora, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
- Courts and play area: a sand football pitch, children's games (with parents supervising) and chess tables near the pitch.
- The emerald lagoon: it formed in the old quarry; it is for looking and photos, not for swimming.
- Tereré and bikes: a classic afternoon plan with friends and a flask of tereré, or on a bike.
Getting there: from Acceso Sur (Route PY01) take Avenida Bernardino Caballero and turn onto Calle 2 de Agosto; the main entrance is less than a block away and there is parking (Última Hora, 2017 (opens in a new tab)). Park rules ban alcohol, sound systems and vehicles inside.
What happens on the hill during Holy Week?
It is the biggest date of the year. On Good Friday the Stations of the Cross are staged in the old quarry, lit with hundreds of candles, with estacioneros singing; in 2023 the Candela theatre group from Capiatá performed it for a large crowd (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Arrive early and bring a torch for the walk down.
What to do in central Ñemby
- Plaza Fulgencio Yegros: the central square, with a fountain and fish pond, in front of the San Lorenzo parish church, home of the city's patron saint (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Good for an easy late-afternoon stroll with kids.
- Casa de la Cultura: the city's main museum, on Calle 9 de Agosto next to the central plaza, and the base of the municipal cultural programme.
- Simeón Denis Historical Museum: relics from Ñemby's and Paraguay's history.
- Municipal Market ("el mercadito"): in the centre, with fruit, food, clothes and electronics. Good for a quick bite.
Where to go with friends or kids at the weekend
- Skate park at Plaza Virgen de Schoenstatt: Ñemby has Paraguay's first public skate park, according to Última Hora (opens in a new tab), in this plaza (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Bring a board or skates, or just watch.
- Dino Park Burgers: a dinosaur-themed restaurant aimed at children, open in the evening according to its Instagram (opens in a new tab). Check hours before you go.
Football, music and events
- Lower-division football: Club Fulgencio Yegros plays at its Parque Fulgencio Yegros ground (about 1,000 people) and Club Cristóbal Colón at Estadio Pablo Patricio Bogarín (about 2,500), the biggest in the city. A Sunday match is cheap, very local entertainment.
- Orquesta de Cámara Ñemby: founded in 2005, it plays locally and has performed at Asunción's Teatro Municipal. Follow its social media for dates.
- Fairs and activities on the hill: the municipality runs events on the site; check the Municipalidad de Ñemby's social media before you go.
How to get to Ñemby from Asunción
Ñemby is part of Greater Asunción and Route PY01 (formerly Acceso Sur) runs right through it. By bus from Asunción, take lines 15-2, 15-3, 38, 47, 85, 88, 233 or 18 Lince; from San Lorenzo and Luque, line 2 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). PY01 gets very congested at rush hour, so for the hill or a match, leave mid-morning or head back before 18:00 on weekdays.
