In this guide
In San Alberto, first-level public care is provided by two Family Health Units, USF San Alberto - Gleva 8 and USF San Alberto II, which according to the Ministry of Health offer consultations and medicines free of charge (MSPBS (opens in a new tab)). For hospital admission, complex tests or specialists, the referral hospital is the Hospital Regional de Ciudad del Este, about 90 km south. Choose by need: check-ups and prescriptions at the USF or a private practice, emergencies via 141, specialists by appointment in Ciudad del Este.
Where can you see a doctor for free in San Alberto?
The Ministry of Health lists two USF units in the district: USF San Alberto - Gleva 8 and USF San Alberto II (MSPBS (opens in a new tab)). USFs are the entry point to the public system: general consultations, check-ups, vaccines and free medicines.
- The official directory does not publish hours or addresses for these units. Go early the first time to find out which days a doctor is in and how appointments work.
- If you need a specialist, ask the USF for a written referral; it helps at the hospital.
- Bring your ID and, if you have them, previous test results and a list of your medicines.
What if it is an emergency?
For medical emergencies outside a hospital, call 141; for police, 911 (ITU (opens in a new tab)). In Alto Paraná, ambulances are dispatched by the mobile units control centre based in Ciudad del Este (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
Distances matter. San Alberto is about 90 km north of Ciudad del Este (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)), and in September 2025 the 24-hour ambulances in the north of the department were at the Hernandarias District Hospital (two) and the Itakyry Health Centre (one) (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). In practice:
- Serious emergency: call 141 and, if you drive yourself, head straight south on Route PY07.
- Hospital Regional de Ciudad del Este: Avenida Mariscal López, phone 061-506 710 (MSPBS (opens in a new tab)).
- Hospital Distrital de Hernandarias: Villa Deportiva, phone 0631-22598 (MSPBS (opens in a new tab)).
- Save these numbers on your phone now, not on the day you need them.
Private practice or specialist: how to choose
A district of about 11,000 people (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)) will not have every specialty, so organise your search:
- Define the need: general check-up, paediatrics, gynaecology, dentistry or a specific specialist. Routine care is usually fine locally; cardiology, orthopaedics or imaging will probably mean a trip to Ciudad del Este.
- Ask on WhatsApp first: walk-in or appointment, which days the specialist visits, and the consultation fee.
- Language: most residents are Brazilian or of Brazilian descent, and Portuguese is spoken in any shop (Brasil de Fato, 2018 (opens in a new tab)). If you prefer Portuguese or Guaraní, ask which language the doctor works in.
- A valid prescription must include your details and ID number, the diagnosis, the doctor's signature and stamp, and their professional registration number. Antibiotics are prescription-only and a prescription is valid for five days (La Nación (opens in a new tab)).
Do you have IPS or private insurance?
- IPS (social security): appointments are booked through the call centre, option 1, and IPS confirms by SMS; if you do not confirm or cancel at least 48 hours ahead, you lose the slot (Última Hora, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Ask your employer or cooperative which IPS unit you are assigned to.
- Prepaid health plans: before signing, check the company is on the Superintendencia de Salud register; the regulator closes and delists firms that do not comply (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Ask which Ciudad del Este clinics are in the network, since that is where you will use the plan most.
Before you go
- Heat: summer highs reach about 39 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). With children or older relatives, go early and bring water.
- Payment: ask private practices how they take payment. QR is now the most used electronic payment method in Paraguay (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)), but carry some cash in case the signal drops.
- If you travel to Ciudad del Este: bring ID, referral, previous results and your medicine list, and get the next steps in writing before heading home.
