In San Alberto, the right pharmacy is the one that has your medicine today and confirms it before you leave home. It is a small town in northern Alto Paraná, so message or call with the exact drug name and strength, and if it is something uncommon, order it a few days ahead: Ciudad del Este, the nearest big city, is about 90 km away.

How to find a pharmacy open in San Alberto

San Alberto had 11,162 residents in the 2022 census (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)) and lies about 90 km north of Ciudad del Este. It is the economic centre of the north of the department, home to most of the area's banks and farm businesses (Última Hora, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). Pharmacy hours vary from one to the next.

  • Save two pharmacies with their WhatsApp numbers: the one nearest your home and a backup.
  • Map hours are not always current. At night, on Sundays and on holidays, call first even if it says "open".
  • Watch for local holidays: for the San Alberto Magno patron saint festival in November, the municipality declared a district holiday that also covered shops (Última Hora, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). On those days, check before you go.

What to ask before you go

  • Stock: brand name, active ingredient, strength and form (tablets, syrup, drops, injection).
  • Alternative: if your brand is out, ask what they have with the same active ingredient and check it with the pharmacist or your doctor.
  • Ordering: if they do not have it, ask when it will arrive and have them message you.
  • Payment: card, bank transfer, QR or cash only.

Do you need a prescription?

Antibiotics have been prescription-only in Paraguay since 1 November 2018. The prescription is valid for five days and must show the patient's details and ID (cédula) number, the diagnosis, and the doctor's signature, stamp and professional registration number (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). If you saw a doctor in another city, check the prescription has all of that before you get to the counter.

For monthly medicines, take a photo of the box and the prescription. Any pharmacy can then find the same product, and you can reorder a few days before you run out.

Heat and the cold chain

Summer highs in San Alberto reach about 39 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). If you use insulin or another refrigerated medicine:

  • Make sure it comes out of a fridge at the pharmacy, not off a shelf.
  • Bring a cool box if you will be in the car for a while or are heading back to the farm.
  • Never leave it in a car in the sun, not even for a few minutes.

What to check at the counter

Dinavisa (opens in a new tab), Paraguay's National Health Surveillance Directorate, regulates pharmacies. Its inspections have found products not registered in the country, prices above the set level and missing cold-chain equipment (Última Hora, 2023 (opens in a new tab)).

Taking medicines into Brazil

San Alberto was founded by settlers from the Brazilian states of Paraná and Santa Catarina (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), and many families have doctors or relatives across the border. Before you cross with medicines, keep in mind that using drugs without Anvisa registration goes against Brazilian law (Campo Grande News, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). In September 2026 Anvisa also banned the Paraguayan tirzepatide brand T36, even in personal-use quantities (O Povo (opens in a new tab)). For long-term treatment, buy in the country where your doctor follows you.

What if it is an emergency?

High fever in a child, chest pain or an accident: do not waste time looking for a pharmacy, go to the nearest health service. In the north of the department, the Hospital Distrital de Hernandarias and the Itakyry health centre have 24-hour ambulances (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
