In this guide
In Lambaré you have three ways in: the public Hospital General de Lambaré (opens in a new tab), which has an emergency department; the Family Health Units (USF) in the neighbourhoods for everyday check-ups; or a private practice if you want a specialist on a set appointment. Whichever you pick, check the doctor in the Health Ministry's register, and in an emergency call 141.
Public, USF, IPS or private: where should I go?
- Hospital General de Lambaré (public). It was upgraded from district to general hospital in May 2021, with 120 beds, 15 of them intensive care (opens in a new tab). It is the city's referral centre and the emergency room is busy: in 2023 its head spoke of around 1,000 patients a week (opens in a new tab). For a routine visit, arrive early and expect to wait.
- Family Health Units (USF). The first stop for check-ups, children, pregnancy and chronic conditions. In May 2026 the Health Ministry opened three new USF in the Valle Ybaté, San Roque and La Victoria neighbourhoods (opens in a new tab), meant to serve about 13,000 people. Ask your local unit which days the doctor is in and what it can refer you for.
- IPS (social security). If you pay into IPS, your care runs through its network: book through the Mi IPS portal or the call centre before going.
- Private practice or clinic. No queue and you choose the specialist, but ask the consultation fee and whether they take your insurance before you book.
Are there afternoon or evening consultations?
The Health Ministry runs evening specialist clinics in public hospitals. In 2024 they ran from 4 pm to 10 pm, covering paediatrics, gynaecology, cardiology, dentistry, general medicine and surgery (opens in a new tab), and Hospital General de Lambaré was on the list. Handy if you work during the day, but phone the hospital first to confirm which specialties are still running in the evening.
How do I find a gynaecologist or dermatologist in Lambaré?
- Gynaecology: for routine checks and pregnancy, start at your USF or the hospital, which will refer you if needed. For a yearly check on a fixed date, a private practice is usually quicker.
- Dermatology and other specialties: not every public service has them. Call ahead to ask whether a specialist is available and on which days; if not, you will be referred to Asunción.
- Before booking privately, look the doctor up at controldeprofesiones.mspbs.gov.py (opens in a new tab). It shows whether they are registered, whether the specialty they advertise is on record and whether the registration is current. Do this especially before cosmetic treatments or surgery.
Plan around where you live
Lambaré has 28 neighbourhoods and borders Asunción to the north and west and Villa Elisa to the south-east (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Avenida Cacique Lambaré is the city's main commercial road (InfoNegocios (opens in a new tab)), with many practices and shops, and also the rush-hour traffic. If you live near the Asunción or Villa Elisa border, a practice across the line may be closer than one in central Lambaré. Plan the trip home, not just the trip there.
What to bring
- Your ID (cédula or passport) and, if insured, your IPS details.
- A list of your medicines and past test results (phone photos are fine).
- At private practices, ask whether they accept QR, card or cash only, and ask for an invoice, which is mandatory for every sale of services (opens in a new tab).
- With IPS, watch your phone: you get a text and must confirm or cancel within the 48 hours before the appointment (opens in a new tab), or you lose the slot.
What if it's an emergency?
Call 141, the pre-hospital medical emergency number, or 911 (opens in a new tab). If you can travel, go straight to the emergency department at Hospital General de Lambaré. Save those numbers in your phone now and know the quickest route to the hospital from home.
