In this guide
To budget in San Alberto, split your spending into five lines: housing with utilities, monthly shopping, fuel for trips to Ciudad del Este (about 90 km south on Route PY07), health and outings. In a farming town in Alto Paraná the rent is rarely the surprise; the trips for things the town lacks and the summer power bill are, with highs around 39 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
What income figure to plan around
Since 1 July 2026, Paraguay's minimum wage for unspecified activities is G. 3,044,000 a month, with a daily rate of G. 117,077 and G. 12,683 an hour (ABC Color (opens in a new tab); IP Paraguay (opens in a new tab)). Employees have 9% deducted for IPS social security (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)): on the minimum wage that is G. 273,960, leaving G. 2,770,040.
Budget fixed costs against that net figure, not the gross. If your income comes with the harvest, as much work tied to the area's soy, wheat and corn does (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), divide the harvest income by 12 and spend only that share each month.
Housing and utilities
- Rent: there is no specific tenancy law. The deposit is usually one month, a one-year term is presumed if the contract sets none, and there is no cap on increases (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)). Count the deposit as a move-in cost and agree any increase in writing.
- Electricity: near-40 °C heat means air conditioning and a higher ANDE bill. A study presented in July 2026 also recommends raising ANDE's average tariff by up to 39.4% gradually through 2030 (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). On a multi-year lease, leave headroom on this line.
- Winter: lows reach about 0 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Budget for warm clothes and, in a cold house, a heater.
Where to save on health care
The Health Ministry runs two family health units in the district, USF San Alberto - Gleva 8 and USF San Alberto II, with free consultations and medicines (MSPBS (opens in a new tab)). Use them for check-ups, vaccines and repeat prescriptions. For admissions or specialists, the public referral hospital is the Hospital Regional de Ciudad del Este on Avenida Mariscal López (MSPBS (opens in a new tab)). That visit also means a day of fuel and meals out, so give it its own line.
Shopping and payments
- QR: in April 2026, 7 in 10 electronic payments on the Bancard network were made by QR (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Paying by QR from your bank app leaves a record, which makes tracking easy.
- Reais: over 80% of residents are Brazilian or of Brazilian descent (Brasil de Fato, 2018 (opens in a new tab)). If you earn or save in reais, Bancard merchants have been able to accept Pix from Brazilian accounts since February 2024 (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)); compare the rate applied with a currency exchange.
- Receipts and prices: ask for an invoice and check prices are shown in guaraníes; consumer agency Sedeco requires an invoice for every sale and rounding in the buyer's favour (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
- Ciudad del Este: group everything the town lacks (spare parts, electronics, paperwork, specialists) into one trip a month. The round trip is about 180 km; work out the fuel from that day's pump price and your vehicle's consumption.
Outings with no entry fee
- San Alberto Magno patron festival, in November: novena, arts festival, procession and the Costillón barbecue, which drew about 350 people in 2021 (Última Hora, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
- Itaipú: dam tours were free for domestic visitors with prior booking, and the Monumental Lighting ran Friday and Saturday at 19:30 (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). Check times when you book.
- Lago de la República and Playa Ñande Renda, Ciudad del Este: two outings with no entry fee (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Pair them with the monthly shopping trip.
- Limoy Biological Reserve: inside the district, run by Itaipú, with guided visits and environmental education activities (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Arrange it first: Itaipú's reserves need your own vehicle and a prior permit, and Limoy is hard to reach without 4WD (Lonely Planet (opens in a new tab)).
