To pick a vet in Caacupé, start with what you need: a routine check-up or vaccine can be handled at a clinic in town, feed and farm-animal supplies go through agroveterinarias, and surgery or a serious emergency may mean a referral toward the Asunción metro area, about 54 km away on Route PY02. Call before you load the animal so you know a vet is actually on duty that day.

Vet clinic, agroveterinaria or pet shop?
You will find all three in Caacupé, and they do different jobs:
- Veterinary clinic or practice: consults, vaccines, deworming, wound care and, in some cases, scheduled surgery. This is where dogs and cats should go.
- Agroveterinaria: feed, dewormers, vaccines and supplies for cattle, poultry and pets. Some have a vet on certain days, others only sell.
- Pet shop: food, accessories and grooming. Good for shopping, not for a sick animal.
Before going, ask whether a veterinarian is seeing patients right now, not just whether the shop is open.
How do I know a clinic is licensed?
In Paraguay, SENACSA licenses veterinary clinics (opens in a new tab), and every clinic needs a technical veterinary adviser with professional registration. In the same report, SENACSA's registry director said most malpractice complaints come from unlicensed premises.
You can ask the clinic about its license and the name and registration of the vet in charge. A serious clinic will show them without fuss.
What should I ask on the phone first?
- Is a vet seeing patients now, and until when?
- Do you handle after-hours emergencies or have an on-call number?
- Do you do surgery, ultrasound or lab tests on site, or refer out?
- Can you hospitalize the animal if needed?
- How much is a consult, and how can I pay (cash, QR, transfer)?
Bring the vaccine booklet if you have one, the name of any medicine you already gave, and, if the problem comes and goes, a short phone video of the symptom.
What if it is an emergency or complex surgery?
If a Caacupé clinic cannot handle the case, referral usually means heading toward the Asunción metro area on Route PY02. Ask the referring clinic to call ahead so you are expected.
A lower-cost option is the UNA Faculty of Veterinary Sciences on the San Lorenzo campus, on the same route: according to ABC Color (opens in a new tab), it offers reduced-cost care for owners facing financial difficulty, with limited slots and hours. Call before you travel.
For the trip, use a carrier or secure the animal on the seat, bring water and avoid the hottest hours: summer highs in Caacupé can approach 39 °C, according to Wikipedia (opens in a new tab).
How does the December 8 festival affect things?
Every December 8, thousands of pilgrims come to Caacupé for the feast of the Virgin, many walking along the highway. In the days around the festival, traffic near the Basílica and on PY02 gets heavy, so move vaccines and check-ups to November and keep the number of a clinic you can reach without crossing the center.
In past years, Paraguay's National Anti-Rabies Center ran free rabies vaccination for dogs and cats in Caacupé (opens in a new tab) during the festival operation. Ask the municipality whether it is repeated this year.
How do I choose between two or three options?
Go with the one that answers clearly on the phone, explains what it can and cannot do, and gives you a quote before starting treatment. Distance matters in an emergency, but for planned surgery a place that tells you who will operate and how is worth the extra drive.
