To shop in Caaguazú, start in Barrio Centro around Plaza Bartolomé Aquino, and save the shops on the PY02 highway for things you need to load into the car. If you want something typical, Caaguazú is Paraguay's "Timber Capital": handmade wooden furniture is the purchase that justifies the trip. Wherever you buy, ask for an invoice and, for big items, get the delivery cost and the warranty in writing before you pay.

Where do people shop in Caaguazú?

The city no longer lives only from timber; it is now a commerce and services hub on the PY02, about 180 km from Asunción and 144 km from Ciudad del Este (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Infonegocios (2025) (opens in a new tab) describes it as a growing commercial centre linked by routes 2, 8 and 13.

Coming in from the countryside? Park once in the centre and walk. UberX and Uber Moto also operate in town (Última Hora, 2024 (opens in a new tab)).

Furniture and wood: the classic buy

For decades Caaguazú was the country's top timber producer and exporter, with sawmills and handmade furniture among its main industries (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)), and sawmills and carpentry shops were still working in 2025 (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)). In 2015 ABC Color counted about 30 carpenters' stalls by the highway at the entrance to the town centre, selling furniture, wooden toys and household items (ABC Color, 2015 (opens in a new tab)); the road has been widened since, so ask locally where they are now.

Before buying furniture:

  • Dry wood: ask what timber it is and whether it is properly seasoned; green wood warps in the humidity.
  • Measurements: bring the size of the wall and of your front door.
  • Delivery: get the freight price in writing, especially if you live in Coronel Oviedo, Asunción or Ciudad del Este.
  • Written warranty: Law 1334/98 (opens in a new tab) requires any warranty offered to be in writing (art. 11) and defects or second-hand condition to be disclosed (art. 12).
  • Made to order: get a sketch, delivery date and deposit amount in the same document or chat.

What to buy close to the producer

Caaguazú department is Paraguay's top cassava producer and among the leaders in sugar cane and cotton (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). Cassava, corn and seasonal vegetables are usually best fresh from a market stall; for the weekly shop see our guide to supermarkets in Caaguazú.

Always ask for an invoice

In April 2025 the tax agency DNIT ran 309 checks on shops in Caaguazú city to see whether they issued sales receipts correctly and whether their declared activity matched what they did (DNIT (opens in a new tab)). Infonegocios notes that informal trade and smuggling remain a problem locally (Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). For you that means:

Paying and timing

  • https://www.abc.com.py/negocios/2026/05/19/revolucion-de-los-pagos-digitales-7-de-cada-10-se-procesan-con-qr/ and cash: https://www.abc.com.py/negocios/2026/05/19/revolucion-de-los-pagos-digitales-7-de-cada-10-se-procesan-con-qr/ is already 68.1% of electronic payments (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)) and most established shops take it; carry small notes for stalls and markets.
  • Heat: summer highs reach about 42 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Shop in the morning and pick up chilled goods last.
  • Winter: lows can hit 0 °C, so buy heaters and warm clothes before the first frost. For clothes, see clothing stores in Caaguazú.

Buying through WhatsApp or social media

Many shops sell on Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp. Ask for real photos, measurements and the exchange policy in the chat before transferring money. If the deal was made outside the shop, by phone or at your home, you have seven days to cancel as long as the item is unused and undamaged (Law 1334, art. 26 (opens in a new tab)).
