To choose a hotel in Caacupé, start with the date: between 28 November and 8 December, during the novena to the Virgin, the town receives hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and in 2025 Route PY02 was closed to vehicles from the Ypacaraí entrance, so book well ahead and plan how you will arrive. The rest of the year, Caacupé is about 54 km from Asunción (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), and the main choice is between sleeping steps from the Basilica or at a hotel with grounds on the edge of town.
Near the Basilica or a park hotel outside the centre?
- A few blocks from the Basilica: practical if you are coming for Mass, the museum or the Tupãsy Ykua spring and want to walk everywhere. The trade-off is more noise and crowds at weekends and in December.
- A hotel with grounds and a pool: better for a rest or with kids. One example is Alta Gracia Parque Hotel, which says it is less than 1 km from the Basilica on Route PY02, with 32 rooms, outdoor pools, gardens across about 18 hectares, a gym and a spa (Alta Gracia (opens in a new tab)). Its restaurant, De las Sierras, also serves non-guests (visitparaguay.travel (opens in a new tab)), and Wikipedia lists it among the town's hotels (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- Small guesthouses and posadas: the national tourism office mentions guesthouses, posadas and tourism ventures surrounded by nature (visitparaguay.travel (opens in a new tab)). Fine for a simple night; ask exactly what is included.
- For an early hike: guided walks up Cerro Kavaju used to leave on Saturdays and Sundays from 7:00 am (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Staying in Caacupé the night before saves a pre-dawn drive from Asunción.
What changes in December, during the pilgrimage?
The feast of the Virgin of Caacupé is 8 December and the novena starts on 28 November (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). In 2025 the arrangements were (La Nación (opens in a new tab)):
- From the Ypacaraí entrance, no vehicles were allowed on the pilgrims' stretch of PY02.
- Six mandatory bus stops ran between Ypacaraí and Caacupé, including the Caacupé bus terminal and the municipal post opposite Lagorã.
- On 7 and 8 December buses could drop passengers near the toll and return to Asunción.
What that means for your booking:
- Book early and in writing, with exact dates and the full price.
- Ask how to reach the hotel by car on those days: whether there is access by side streets and parking inside the property.
- Ask for a room at the back if you want sleep: the night of 7–8 December has a serenade and pre-dawn Masses.
- Plan B: if Caacupé is full, Ypacaraí and other Cordillera towns are options, knowing the last stretch may be on foot.
What to ask before paying a deposit
- Total price: prices must include taxes (Law 1334/98, art. 10 (opens in a new tab)). Ask whether breakfast is included.
- Parking: on-site and enclosed, especially if you arrive at night.
- Air conditioning: Caacupé is milder than Asunción thanks to its altitude, but average summer highs reach 39 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Confirm your room has it.
- Check-in time: if you arrive late, make sure someone is at reception.
- Cancellation: what happens to the deposit if you change dates, especially in December.
- Invoice: every sale of goods and services must carry an invoice (Sedeco via ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
Houses and apartments on apps: are they legal?
Paraguay's tourism ministry (Senatur) ruled that anyone regularly renting accommodation through platforms such as Airbnb or social media must register with the National Tourism Registry under Law 2828/05 (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Senatur also recommends checking Registur, its online register of licensed providers, before booking (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Many last-minute offers appear on social media in December; if the host is not listed, do not transfer money before seeing the place.
Getting to Caacupé
Caacupé is on Route PY02, which links it to Asunción, with a paved road to Tobatí (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Outside December it is a straight drive on PY02; during the novena, check that year's traffic restrictions before you set off.
