In Hohenau, the things worth your time are the Edwin Krug museum for the colony's story, an afternoon of pools and green space at Parque Manantial or the Sitzmann ecological park, and sunset at the port on the Paraná River. If you can pick your dates, come in late September for the National Festival of Communities (Fiesta Nacional de las Colectividades).

The colony's history: the Edwin Krug museum

The Centro Histórico y Cultural Edwin Krug is in the former home of Edwin Krug, who donated it to the town (La Nación, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). Inside are objects from the first immigrants' lives: household items, tools, period radios and a film camera that still works; look out for the basement once used to store food (La Nación, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). It also holds Chaco War pieces, and Hohenau's tourism office works from here (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab); Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)), so make it your first stop for maps and tips.

Nature and pools: Parque Manantial and Parque Sitzmann

The river: Hohenau port and fishing

Roads to the river outside the town centre can be dirt; after heavy rain, ask before driving down (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).

What festivals does Hohenau have?

On festival dates, book a bed early: the towns around here have few rooms.

Where to eat and sleep

The simplest plan is lunch at the Parque Manantial restaurant and, if you stay, a room there too (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab); Parque Manantial (opens in a new tab)). For other options, ask at the tourism office in the Krug museum or at Mate Róga, the Colonias Unidas tourist office at the PY06 roundabout in Bella Vista (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). Encarnación, about 35 km away, has far more hotels.

Getting to Hohenau and what is nearby

Hohenau is about 35 km from Encarnación on Route PY06, which runs through the town centre (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), at km 35 of that road (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Buses head north on PY06 from Encarnación's terminal (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)); ask to get off in central Hohenau. For the port and parks, a car or a remís (local taxi) makes the day easier.

On the same road are Obligado (km 38) and Bella Vista (km 48) (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), and a few kilometres before Hohenau, coming from Encarnación, the Trinidad ruins (things to do in Trinidad). For an hour-by-hour plan, see the Hohenau day trip; for yerba mate, see things to do in Bella Vista.
