To buy from a hardware store (ferretería) in Caacupé, split small jobs from big ones: for a plumbing or electrical part, use the shop in your own barrio or compañía (rural district); for a building job, use a store that gives written quotes and delivers. Send your list with sizes by WhatsApp first and, if the work is for the end of the year, buy before the December novena.
Town-centre store, local shop or straight from Tobatí?
Caacupé has 36 barrios, 22 urban and 14 rural (opens in a new tab), with Route PY02 running through the district. If you live in a compañía such as Cabañas, about 5 km northwest of the centre (opens in a new tab), it isn't always worth driving into town for one small part.
- Everyday repairs: the nearest ferretería can sort out a tap, a breaker or screws. Take the old part or a photo with the size.
- Building work or bulk: get cement, rebar, roofing sheets, pipes and bathroom fittings quoted by two stores and compare the total including delivery.
- Bricks and roof tiles: Tobatí, reached by a paved road to the northeast (opens in a new tab), is the town most associated with ceramics and building materials, with olerías (small kilns) making bricks and tiles on both sides of the road (opens in a new tab). For large quantities, get a price there too and compare it with the store's quote, delivery included.
Terrain and weather
The town sits on a hilltop and the Cordillera de los Altos crosses part of the district (opens in a new tab). Some streets are steep, so when you order delivery, ask whether the truck can reach your site or will unload at the corner.
The climate is mild by Paraguayan standards, but average highs reach 39 °C, lows 3 °C, with about 1,536 mm of rain a year (opens in a new tab). If cement or lime will sit on site, have it delivered close to when you'll use it and keep it under cover.
When not to take deliveries
From the novena to 8 December, Caacupé changes pace. In 2025 the novena began on 28 November (opens in a new tab); pilgrims walk along PY02 from the Ypacaraí toll, and vehicles are not allowed on the inbound-to-Asunción side from the Ypacaraí entrance.
- Do the big shop and receive materials before late November.
- If your site is near the Basilica or the highway, schedule deliveries outside those dates.
- On feast days, check whether the store is open and when.
What to send first and how to compare quotes
Send the full list by WhatsApp with sizes (pipe diameter, cable gauge, rebar length, number of bags), the brand you want, and whether you need cutting or delivery.
Paraguay's consumer protection law, Ley 1334 (opens in a new tab), helps you compare:
- Prices must include taxes and be stated precisely (art. 10).
- If they provide a service (cutting, delivery), they must tell you the price, payment method and how long the quote is valid (art. 15).
- Extra costs must be disclosed before the work is done (art. 16).
Compare the total: materials plus delivery and cutting. If you're in a compañía, ask whether delivery costs more with distance.
Electrical parts: what to check
The standards institute INTN warned that cheap plugs and sockets made of plastic or ferrous metal heat up, melt, spark and can start fires (opens in a new tab), and recommends copper contacts. The standard it promotes is PNA IEC 60906-1, for plugs up to 16 amps and 250 volts; in 2022 it was voluntary. Ask to see the contacts and check with your electrician before buying for the whole house.
Paying and paperwork
- QR: in April 2026 it made up 68.1% of electronic payments (opens in a new tab), according to Bancard. Still carry some cash if you're buying straight from a kiln or a small shop.
- Always get an invoice (factura): Sedeco reminds sellers that every sale must be invoiced (opens in a new tab).
- Written warranty for power tools and pumps, with length and coverage.
- Check the order before signing the delivery note: quantities, sizes and no damaged pieces.
FAQ
Where can I buy bricks and roof tiles near Caacupé?
Tobatí, linked to Caacupé by a paved road, has small kilns making bricks and tiles along the road. Get a price there and compare it with a hardware store's quote, delivery included.
Should I take deliveries in Caacupé in December?
Avoid the novena: in 2025 it began on 28 November, with traffic restrictions on PY02 until 8 December. Get materials delivered before then.
Do hardware stores in Caacupé deliver to rural areas?
It depends on the store. Ask whether they reach your compañía, whether the truck can get up your street, and have the delivery cost written into the quote.
How long is a hardware-store quote valid?
If the store provides a service such as cutting or delivery, Ley 1334 requires it to tell you how long the quote is valid. Get it in writing.
