From Asunción, San Cosme y Damián is not a day trip: the town is about 330 km away in southern Itapúa (Última Hora, 2022 (opens in a new tab); UN Tourism (opens in a new tab)), and the round trip eats the whole day on the road. It does work as a full day if you stay in Encarnación (87 km) or Ayolas (53 km) (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)), or as a weekend from Asunción with a night in a village guesthouse. Here are all three plans.

Where should you start from?

Starting point · Distance · Works as a day trip?

Encarnación · 87 km · Yes

Ayolas · 53 km · Yes

Asunción · about 330 km · No: plan a weekend

Distances from ABC Color (2025) (opens in a new tab), Última Hora (2022) (opens in a new tab) and UN Tourism (opens in a new tab). The town is reached by a 25 km paved access road from Route PY01 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).

Plan 1: a day from Encarnación

The simplest option. Head out on PY01 in the morning, visit the mission and the astronomy centre, have a barbecue lunch at the municipal beach and drive back in daylight. We map it stop by stop, including Carmen del Paraná and Coronel Bogado, in our San Cosme day trip from Encarnación. The sand dunes in older photos are gone: they went under water in July 2023 (La Nación, 2023 (opens in a new tab)).

Plan 2: a day from Ayolas, on the Misiones side

If you are in Ayolas for the dam, San Cosme is 53 km away (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). The order that works:

  1. Morning: Atinguy wildlife refuge. Run by the Yacyretá binational entity, on the road to San Cosme about 12–13 km from Ayolas. Its star is Chiqui, a jaguar that arrived about 18 years ago (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). In 2023 it opened 8:00–15:00, with guided visits at 8:00, 9:00, 10:30 and 13:00 (Última Hora, 2023 (opens in a new tab)).
  2. Midday: San Cosme municipal beach. Free entry, clear water, benches, toilets, parking and grills for rent (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab); Última Hora, 2020 (opens in a new tab)).
  3. Afternoon: the Jesuit mission and the Buenaventura Suárez Astronomy Centre. The centre sits within the mission grounds, with a planetarium, a multimedia room on the Guaraní sky, a gnomon, an armillary sphere and a solar telescope (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
  4. Back to Ayolas before dark. If you want the night telescope session, sleep in San Cosme instead.

Plan 3: a weekend from Asunción

Saturday. Leave early, heading south on PY01. Arrive in the afternoon for the mission and astronomy centre, and stay for the night session: according to ABC Color (January 2025), day visits run 7:00–19:30 and night visits 19:30–21:00, every day (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Sleep in one of the village guesthouses (posadas turísticas): UN Tourism counts 15, all family homes serving food from their own gardens (UN Tourism (opens in a new tab)).

Sunday. In the morning, the Mbya Guaraní Pindó community circuit: a forest trail with explanations of traditional medicine, seeds and wild yerba mate, plus woven and wooden crafts (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab); UN Tourism (opens in a new tab)). Then either head back to Asunción or continue to Encarnación and use the same ticket at Trinidad and Jesús, valid for 72 hours (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Trinidad is about 30 km from Encarnación on PY06 (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)).

Tickets and hours

According to ABC Color (January 2025), entry to the astronomy centre costs G. 40,000 for foreigners, G. 25,000 for Paraguayans, G. 12,500 for over-65s and is free up to age 12; it is also valid for 72 hours at Trinidad and Jesús (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Keep the ticket even if you don't plan to use it: plans on this route change often.

Road tips

  • Heat: in summer, Paraguay's Health Ministry advises outdoor activity before 10:00 or after 17:00 (MSPBS (opens in a new tab)). Use the hottest hours for the beach and leave the mission for late afternoon.
  • By bus: companies link San Cosme with Encarnación, Ciudad del Este and Asunción (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Ask for the last return bus at the terminal before you go.
  • Night driving: if you stay for the night session, book a bed before you set off rather than driving the long way back in the dark.
