In this guide
From Asunción, Ayolas is not a day trip: it sits about 305 km south along Route PY01 (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)), so more than 600 km there and back, and the free Yacyretá dam tour leaves in the morning. Plan a weekend instead: drive down on Saturday stopping at the Jesuit towns of Misiones, reach Ayolas for sunset, do the dam early on Sunday, eat river fish and head home. If you are already in Encarnación, a full day does work: see our Encarnación–Ayolas–San Cosme loop.
The route: PY01 to San Patricio, then PY20
- Route PY01 south, through San Ignacio at km 226 (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
- At San Patricio leave PY01 for PY20: Santiago is at km 17 of that road and Ayolas at km 49 (Wikipedia, Route 20 (opens in a new tab)).
- Take care on PY20: in January 2026 the surface was worn, with potholes on several stretches (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Drive it in daylight.
First stop: San Ignacio's Jesuit art museum
San Ignacio has the Museo Diocesano de Arte de las Reducciones Jesuíticas, five rooms of baroque carvings including a Saint Michael the Archangel. In June 2026 it opened Tuesday to Saturday, 08:00–11:30 and 14:30–17:00, with Sundays and holidays by booking only. Entry was G. 20,000 per person, G. 10,000 for students aged 14–17 and free for under-13s (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). It is a good mid-morning leg-stretch. For the town itself, see our San Ignacio Guazú guide.
Along the way: Santa Rosa and Santiago
- Santa Rosa (248 km from Asunción): reached by an access road off PY01. Detour for the Capilla de Loreto, with frescoes painted using natural plant saps, and the old stone Jesuit bell tower (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
- Santiago (278 km): already on the road to Ayolas. Its Museo Diocesano de Arte Jesuítico stands beside the parish church, on Plaza Fulgencio Yegros, which is lined with colonial-era houses (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
We found no published opening hours for the Santa Rosa and Santiago museums; on a Sunday or holiday, ask at the parish before counting on getting in.
Arriving in Ayolas: sunset by the river
Roll in past the Plaza de los Pescadores, with its giant dorado, pacú and surubí figures at the entrance to the San José Mí, Santa Rosa de Lima and San Antonio neighbourhoods (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). Nearby San José Mí beach has camping, grills and a big playground (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). For dinner, order river fish: pira chyryry, surubí milanesa or bagre stew (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
Day two: the dam in the morning, then home early
- Book the tour the day before with the Yacyretá visitor centre on +595 987 210001. The EBY circuits are free and in January 2026 ran daily from 07:00 to 15:00 (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)); powerhouse tours leave between 07:00 and 13:00 from the reception centre in Villa Permanente (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Bring ID.
- Take the earliest slot so you finish before noon and still have time for the Museo Histórico Ambiental, also in Villa Permanente.
- Eat, then leave in daylight: you have 300+ km ahead and PY20 is not a road for night driving.
Full tour details, the Atinguy wildlife refuge and the Akuti Po'i trail are in our Yacyretá dam visit guide.
When to go and what to bring
- Summer: highs in Ayolas reach 41 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Do the dam early and save the river for late afternoon.
- September: Ayolas marks its anniversary with an international dorado fishing contest; in 2024 it was held on 29 September (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Book a room early that weekend.
- Own car: you need a vehicle for the dam and the Atinguy refuge.
