In this guide
The highlight of San Ignacio Guazú is its Jesuit art: the Diocesan Museum, with carvings made by Guaraní artisans in the mission founded in 1609, the historic centre with its mission-era Casa de los Indios, and the new MUVA with 78 murals. If you can pick your dates, go at Easter: Tañarandy's Good Friday is the best-known night in Misiones. The town is at km 226 on Route PY01.

Easter in Tañarandy
Tañarandy is a community of San Ignacio where the procession of Our Lady of Sorrows takes place every Good Friday. It leaves the Santa Cruz Tañarandy chapel, follows the Yvága Rape path lit by thousands of oil lamps and ends at the barraca, where a living tableau of the Passion is staged at night; in 2026 it stood 16 m high and 9 m wide (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Koki Ruiz started the tradition in 1992 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), and today his daughters Macarena and Almudena run it; it draws thousands of Paraguayan and foreign visitors (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
- Book a bed weeks ahead, or stay in another Misiones town.
- Arrive in daylight to find your way and park; the tableau is at night.
