Areguá fits easily into a day from Asunción: it is about 30 km away, so you can leave at 8:00, start at Cerro Kõi while it is cool, have lunch in the centre among potters and museums, and finish on the Lake Ypacaraí pier. Go Thursday to Sunday, when the Centro Cultural del Lago is open, and on weekends return via Patiño to buy strawberries in Estanzuela.
How do you get to Areguá from Asunción?
- By car: about 30 km (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). For this route, come in on the Ramal from Capiatá, the road where Cerro Kõi is (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)), and leave on the Areguá–Patiño road.
- By bus: the Aregüeña line runs to the town and along the Patiño road (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)); there is also a Luque–Areguá line (Museo del Barro (opens in a new tab)). Without a car, save Kõi for the end or take a short taxi from the centre.
- Bring: small cash notes, water, a hat and closed shoes.
Morning: Cerro Kõi and Chororí while it is cool
- 8:45, Cerro Kõi. A natural monument since 1993, with honeycomb-like octagonal sandstone formations (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It covers about 12 hectares on the Ramal between Areguá and Capiatá (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)).
- 9:45, Cerro Chororí. About 300 m west of Kõi, with a five-hectare protected area (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)).
- Why early: in summer Paraguay's Health Ministry advises outdoor activity before 10:00 or after 17:00 (MSPBS (opens in a new tab)). There is no shade on the rocks.
Late morning and lunch: the centre on foot
- 10:30, La Candelaria church. Park nearby: it sits at the top of Avenida del Lago (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)) and everything else is a walk on cobbled streets.
- 11:00, potters' fair and El Cántaro. The fair lines Avenida De la Candelaria, with prices from G. 5,000 in 2023 (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). El Cántaro, opposite the parish church, sells clay, wood and iron pieces from its workshops (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab); Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Look first and buy heavy pieces at the end of the day.
- 12:00, Centro Cultural del Lago. At Yegros 855, with the ceramics museum (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab); La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). In March 2025 it opened Thursday and Friday 9:00–17:00, Saturday 10:00–18:00 and Sunday 10:30–18:00 (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
- 13:00, lunch at La Escondida. A restaurant in an old mansion on Mariscal Estigarribia, a few blocks from the church, with a lunch buffet in 2023 (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab); La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
Afternoon: station, lake and strawberries
- 14:30, Estación A. The old railway station is now a cultural centre with tourist information (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)); the lawn in front is good for a shady tereré (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
- 16:00, municipal beach and pier. Walk down Avenida del Lago to the municipal beach (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)); the pier is the sunset spot over Lake Ypacaraí (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
- On the way back, Estanzuela. The strawberry growers' hall is at km 33 of the Areguá–Patiño road and opens Saturdays, Sundays and holidays 8:00–19:00, with parking and toilets (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)) and a playground (Hoy, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). The main harvest is July and August (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). From Patiño you join the PY02 back to Asunción.
