In this guide
In Areguá, about 30 km from Asunción, the things to do are: walk the old town between the La Candelaria church and the potters' streets, step into the Centro Cultural del Lago and Estación A, head down to the lake for sunset, and climb Cerro Kõi to see its eight-sided sandstone rocks. Here it is by area, with opening hours where they have been published.
Old town: church, potters and galleries
- La Candelaria church. It sits at the top of Avenida del Lago and is the town's landmark (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Cobbled streets and old mansions run down from it (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Tip: park near the church and do everything on foot.
- Potters' fair on Avenida De la Candelaria. A row of stalls selling planters, urns, tableware and garden pieces; in May 2023 it ran 8:00 to 22:00 with prices from G. 5,000 (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). For what to check before buying, see our Areguá pottery guide.
- El Cántaro. An art shop opposite the parish church with clay, wood and iron pieces from its workshops (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab); Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
Museums and cultural spaces
- Centro Cultural del Lago. At Yegros 855, with a ceramics museum (pieces from Areguá, Itá and Tobatí), Indigenous art, naïve painting and photography (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab); ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). In March 2025 it opened Thursday and Friday 9:00–17:00, Saturday 10:00–18:00 and Sunday 10:30–18:00; phone +595 985 860 912 (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Tip: it was not listed as open Monday to Wednesday, so avoid those days.
- Estación A. The old railway station, now a cultural centre with tourist information and a photography museum that opens every fortnight, plus guided walks of the old town (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). The lawn in front is a good spot for a picnic or tereré (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
Nature: Cerro Kõi, Chororí and the lake
- Cerro Kõi. A natural monument since 1993, known for honeycomb-like octagonal sandstone formations (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It covers about 12 hectares on the road between Areguá and Capiatá, locally called "el Ramal" (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Tip: go in the morning with closed shoes and water.
- Cerro Chororí. About 300 m west of Kõi, with a five-hectare protected area (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Do both in one outing.
- Municipal beach and pier. Avenida del Lago runs down from the church to the municipal beach (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), which has benches, a beach football and volleyball court and a playground (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). The pier is the place for sunset over Lake Ypacaraí (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). It is a stroll, not a swimming day.
Where to eat
- La Escondida. A restaurant in an old mansion on Calle Mariscal Estigarribia, a few blocks from the town hall and church; in May 2023 it served a lunch buffet and an evening menu, with live music on some days (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab); La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
- Strawberries. In August stalls sell fresh strawberries (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)) and the strawberry festival is held that month, at harvest time (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
When to go
- Weekends: the Centro Cultural del Lago is open Thursday to Sunday and the fair is busy, so more is open.
- August: strawberry season.
- 28 May, Ceramics Day: in 2026 workshops, tours and fairs ran until 31 May (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
- November–December, Expo Pesebre: nativity scenes in front of the town hall on Avenida Mariscal Estigarribia; in 2024 it ran 22 November to 23 December (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)).
Getting there
- By bus: the Aregüeña line runs to the town and along the road to Patiño (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
- By car: about 30 km (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). You can come in or leave by the Ramal towards Capiatá, which passes Cerro Kõi.
