To budget for life in Itauguá, put the commute right next to the rent. The town sits about 30 km from Asunción and Route PY02 runs straight through it (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), so if you work in the capital, bus fares or fuel and the hours on the road weigh almost as much as housing. Split your budget into five lines: net income, housing with utilities, transport, health and food, and leave room for summer electricity.

What income should you plan around?

From 1 July 2026, Paraguay's general minimum wage is G. 3,044,000 a month (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Employees pay 9% into IPS, the social security health system (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)): on the minimum wage that is G. 273,960, leaving G. 2,770,040 take-home. Use that net figure, not the gross, as the ceiling for fixed costs.

What to check before renting in Itauguá

  • Which side of the highway: PY02 splits the municipality. North of it are rural districts such as Estanzuela, Patiño and Guayaibity; south are Itauguá Guasú, Mboi'y and Potrerito (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). A cheap house several kilometres off the highway can mean adding a motorbike or a second bus every day.
  • The lease: Paraguay has no specific tenancy law. The deposit is usually one month, a lease with no stated term is presumed to run one year, and there is no legal cap on increases (Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Count the deposit as a move-in cost and get the yearly increase in writing.
  • Electricity in your name: if a new meter is needed, in September 2024 ANDE, the state power company, charged G. 89,745 for a standard single-phase home connection, and the request must be signed by a licensed electrician (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)).
  • Summer bills: air conditioning pushes the power bill up from December to March. A study presented in July 2026 also recommended raising ANDE's average tariff by up to 39.4% gradually until 2030 (Última Hora, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). On a multi-year lease, leave slack in this line.

How much does the PY02 commute cost?

  • Bus: the fare depends on your line. Note what you pay in the first week and multiply by 44 (two trips a day, 22 working days). Double it if you change buses.
  • Delays: PY02 also runs through central Capiatá, where a single crash once closed the whole Asunción-bound lane (Última Hora, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). If being late costs you money, leave earlier.
  • December: the pilgrimage to Caacupé brings general traffic diversions on PY02 through Itauguá (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Budget extra travel time that month or ask for flexible hours.
  • Car or motorbike: work out real daily kilometres at the day's fuel price and add parking if you work in central Asunción.

Where can you save on food?

  • Municipal market: it burned on 10 May 2026 and vendors moved onto the street under awnings (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Check where they are trading now before planning your shopping around it.
  • Estanzuela strawberries: growers run a sales hall at km 33 of the Areguá–Patiño road, open Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 8:00 to 19:00; the harvest peaks in July and August (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Buy in season, straight from the farm.
  • Wholesalers and supermarkets: the Ahorrá Py wholesale campaign gave 15% to 45% off about 4,000 products from 24 April to 8 May 2026 (Hoy, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Time your big stock-up of non-perishables for promotions like that.
  • Pay by QR: in April 2026, QR made up 68.1% of electronic payments processed by Bancard (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Every payment shows up in your bank app, which makes tracking spending easy.

What about health care?

The Hospital Nacional de Itauguá is in town and serves as a national referral hospital: in April 2026 it handled 28,027 consultations and 7,127 emergency visits (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Care is public, but in 2024 patients reported medicine shortages and having to buy supplies outside (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)), so keep a monthly line for medication. If you are covered by IPS, you get an SMS to confirm or cancel an appointment up to 48 hours ahead; no reply means you lose the slot (Última Hora, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).

Low-cost things to do

FAQ

How much do you need to live in Itauguá?

It depends mostly on rent and how you commute to Asunción on PY02. As a benchmark, the minimum wage is G. 3,044,000 from 1 July 2026, or G. 2,770,040 after the 9% IPS deduction.

Is Itauguá a good base if you work in Asunción?

Only if the rent you save beats the cost of about 30 km each way plus the hours on PY02. Add both up before you sign.

How much is a rental deposit in Paraguay?

There is no legal amount; one month's rent is usual. There is no cap on increases either, so agree the yearly adjustment in writing.

Where can you buy cheap strawberries near Itauguá?

At the Estanzuela growers' sales hall, km 33 of the Areguá–Patiño road, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 8:00 to 19:00. The harvest peaks in July and August.
