Bookstores in Filadelfia: stationery, school supplies and copies

Where to look on Avenida Hindenburg, when to go, what the MEC kit covers and how to pay at a Filadelfia bookstore.

To find a bookstore or stationery shop in Filadelfia that works for you, keep two things about the central Chaco in mind: shops cluster on Avenida Hindenburg, and most close at midday, on Saturday afternoons and on Sundays (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). Send your list or book title by WhatsApp first, go in the morning and bring cash.

When to go and where to look

  • Hours: most businesses in Filadelfia close roughly 12:00–14:00 on weekdays, plus Saturday afternoon and all Sunday (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). Mornings are the safe bet for supplies or copies.
  • Where: Avenida Hindenburg, the main street, has most of the shops. Avenida Trébol crosses it mid-town, and the Fernheim Cooperative headquarters (Hindenburg and Unruh) is the landmark everyone uses for directions.
  • On your phone: search "librería" or "papelería" on the map, check what's on or near Hindenburg and message before you set off, especially if you're coming in from a village or from Loma Plata, 25 km away (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).

When are the counters busiest?

Demand follows the Ministry of Education (MEC) calendar. In 2026 schools opened on 10 February for staff, classes began on 23 February and the winter break ran 13–23 July (Hoy (opens in a new tab)).

  • January: get a quote by sending a photo of the list. If they make up the order, you just pick it up.
  • First week of classes: teachers ask for extra items; wait for that list before buying everything.
  • After the winter break: restocking notebooks and project materials.

Chaco summers go above 40 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), so shop early if you have kids with you.

Does your child get the MEC kit?

Children at public or state-subsidised schools receive the MEC school kit. In 2026 the ministry asked families not to buy "notebooks, books and other supplies" before it arrived (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). Each bag lists its contents and carries a QR code and WhatsApp numbers for reporting missing items (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).

Open the bag, compare it with the school list and buy only what's missing. Private schools set their own lists, so there you'll buy most of it.

Books in German, Spanish or Indigenous languages

Filadelfia is multilingual: descendants of the Mennonite settlers speak German, others speak Spanish and Guaraní, and Indigenous communities have schools teaching in their own language and Spanish (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). That shapes what you're looking for:

  • Bring the exact title, publisher and ISBN, or a photo of the cover. The same title can exist in different editions.
  • If the school uses German or other-language material, ask the school where families usually get it before you go shop to shop.
  • If it's not in stock, ask whether they can order it and how long it takes: Asunción is 470 km away (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)) and the bus takes about seven hours (Wikivoyage, 2023 (opens in a new tab)).

Copies and printing

For paperwork, school projects or the teacher-training institute:

  • Send the file as a PDF with number of copies, colour or black and white, single or double-sided, and binding.
  • Ask for the price per page and the total, and when to collect, so you don't hit the midday break.
  • For long jobs, ask to see one printed page before they run the lot.

By law, shops must tell you the price including taxes and the payment terms (Law 1334/98, art. 15 (opens in a new tab)).

How to pay

Outside hotels, larger restaurants and the cooperative supermarket, few shops in Filadelfia take cards, so carry cash; there's an ATM on Hindenburg (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). QR payments are growing nationwide: per Bancard, 7 in 10 payments at participating merchants are now made by QR (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). Still, ask before you fill the bag.

  • Ask for an invoice with your RUC if a cooperative, employer or school reimburses you.
  • Ask whether they exchange a wrong item and within what time, and keep the receipt.
