Supermarkets in San Lorenzo: how to choose where to shop

Choosing a supermarket in San Lorenzo: location along your roads, timing, bank discount days, QR and when to use the market or a fair.

A long supermarket checkout aisle shows black conveyor belts loaded with grocery bags, bottles, and yellow packages under fluorescent lights.

  5. Before settling on your regular store

To choose a supermarket in San Lorenzo, think about your route first: the one on your daily way, without driving into the centre at rush hour, usually beats a slightly cheaper store in an awkward spot. Then compare what actually saves money: discount days for your card or wallet app, and whether fruit and vegetables are better bought at the market or a farmers' fair.

Where is it convenient for you?

San Lorenzo is about 9 km from Asunción and borders Luque, Ñemby, Capiatá and Fernando de la Mora (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Shopping clusters along a few corridors:

  • Avenida Mariscal Estigarribia and Avenida Julia Miranda Cueto de Estigarribia, the busy commercial streets downtown.
  • Route PY02 on the east side, around km 14–15.
  • Avenida Mariscal López on the northwest side, towards Fernando de la Mora.

The UNA university campus and the Hospital de Clínicas are also in the city, and the daily flow of students from other cities keeps traffic constant (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). If you live in a neighbourhood such as Villa Universitaria, Barcequillo, Laurelty or San Miguel, pick a store on your side of town or on your way to work, so you don't cross the centre with your shopping.

When to go so you don't lose the afternoon

  • For the big weekly shop, a weekend morning or mid-morning on a weekday is usually calmer than the after-work rush.
  • If your supermarket is near the municipal market, avoid its busiest hours: the surrounding streets (Julia Miranda Cueto, España, General Caballero, Sargento Silva and Ruta Mcal. Estigarribia) fill with stalls and traffic is heavy (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
  • Downtown has paid, controlled street parking (ordinance 18/2024, per ABC Color (opens in a new tab)); if you drive, a store with its own car park is easier.

Saving with cards, QR and promotions

In Paraguay, supermarket savings depend a lot on how you pay:

  • Bank discount days: banks run promotions on specific weekdays, for specific cards, with a monthly spending cap. In 2024, for example, one promotion gave 25% off on Fridays with certain Visa cards, up to a monthly limit (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Check your bank's app: the day, card and cap change often.
  • QR: supermarkets are where Paraguayans pay by QR most, with 35% of all QR transactions (InfoNegocios (opens in a new tab)). Check whether your bank or wallet app offers any perk for paying this way.
  • Shelf offers: under consumer law 1334, a sale sign must show the previous price, the discount percentage and the current price (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). If the till doesn't match, ask them to fix it.
  • Receipt: every purchase must come with an invoice (factura) (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)); give your RUC tax number if you need it for expenses.

Supermarket, market or farmers' fair?

Not everything is best bought in one place:

  • San Lorenzo Municipal Market: in the historic centre, it's the area's main market for fruit, vegetables, meat and cheese (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Greens sellers arrive from 4:00 (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)), so the earlier you go, the more choice. Bring cash in small notes.
  • MAG farmers' fairs: the Ministry of Agriculture holds producer fairs at the Agricultural Extension office on Route PY02 in San Lorenzo, with queso Paraguay, pork, free-range chicken, eggs, cassava, tomatoes, seasonal fruit and honey, among other things (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). Dates vary, so follow the ministry's announcements.
  • Supermarket: for cleaning products, pantry staples, dairy and anything you want done in one stop by card.

Before settling on your regular store

  • Check whether it offers delivery or online ordering with in-store pickup if you'd rather not carry bags.
  • Look at the freshness of the meat and produce sections, not just the flyer prices.
  • Try two or three stores with the same shopping list over a month and note the total: it's the simplest way to see which suits you.
