In San Bernardino, the weekly shop goes best on a weekday or early Friday, before the weekend crowds arrive: in summer some items, meat for example, sell out fast in the supermarkets (Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Pick a supermarket with parking and a good chilled section for the big shop, and one near where you are staying for top-ups.

When should you shop in San Ber?

San Bernardino is about 50 km from Asunción on Lake Ypacaraí, and its high season runs from December to mid-February, when families from across Greater Asunción arrive (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). As early as November 2022 the town hall estimated about 40,000 visitors per weekend and expected that to triple in season (Infonegocios, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).

  • Weekdays or Friday morning: full shelves and easy parking.
  • Saturday afternoon: avoid it if you are driving in from Asunción. On the September 2026 long weekend, Route PY02 was heavily congested from the San Bernardino turn-off to the Ypacaraí toll booth (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
  • Long weekends or January: buy the basics before leaving home and leave only chilled goods and bread for San Ber.

Big supermarket or corner shop?

After Asunción, San Bernardino was one of the towns where supermarket chains expanded fastest (Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)), so you now have large stores as well as convenience shops.

  • Big shop: look for easy parking, a butcher counter and a good dairy and frozen section. Best for a holiday week or a weekend with a barbecue.
  • Top-ups: ice, drinks, bread and whatever you forgot. A shop near your house or the lake saves moving the car at peak times.
  • No car: many businesses and restaurants deliver with their own motorbike riders or through delivery apps (Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)); ask whether the supermarket delivers and to which areas.

What sells out first in summer?

Meat is the example Infonegocios (opens in a new tab) gives: in summer it goes quickly. To avoid a barbecue without meat:

  1. Buy meat on Thursday or early Friday, or bring it from Asunción in a cool box.
  2. Bring insulated bags and pick up frozen goods last.
  3. If you are staying several days, do the big shop on day one and top up as you go.
  4. For year-end holidays, order meat in advance at the supermarket butcher.
