In this guide
In San Alberto, the easiest approach is to pick one main supermarket near home or on your daily route and do a big shop there once a week, with a list. Leave bread, milk and vegetables for the neighbourhood store in between. Ciudad del Este is about 90 km away, so driving out of town for a couple of items rarely pays off.
Should you shop in San Alberto or on a trip to Ciudad del Este?
San Alberto is the economic centre of northern Alto Paraná and has most of the area's banks and farming companies (opens in a new tab). For everyday shopping, what's in town is enough.
- Weekly shop: do it in San Alberto, at the store that sits between home and work.
- Trips to Ciudad del Este: if you're already going for paperwork, a doctor or spare parts, pick up what you can't find locally, but don't drive 90 km just for a promotion. Fuel and time eat the discount.
- If you live out in a colonia or on a farm: do everything in one trip and plan the list around what has to last until the next one.
When is the best time to go?
- Weekday mornings: usually the calmest, with fruit, vegetables and dairy freshly restocked.
- Hot days: summer highs reach about 39 °C (opens in a new tab). Pick up meat, dairy and frozen food last and keep a cool box in the car.
- November: San Alberto celebrates its patron saint, Albert the Great. In 2021 the mayor declared a district holiday for the festivities that also covered shops (opens in a new tab). As the date approaches, watch for municipal announcements and do your big shop beforehand.
How to pay: QR, card, cash or Pix?
QR is now the normal way to pay at supermarkets: in April 2026, 35% of QR transactions on the Bancard network were at supermarkets (opens in a new tab). Before a big shop, check your bank app for which day and which chain your discount applies to, and whether it has a cap.
- Cash: prices must be shown in guaraníes, and if exact change isn't available, rounding must favour the customer (opens in a new tab).
- Pix: since 2024, Bancard merchants can accept Pix from customers with accounts in Brazilian reais (opens in a new tab). Not every store has turned it on, so ask at the till before scanning your items and check which exchange rate they use.
How to compare prices, and what to do if they don't match
- Compare by kilo or litre, not by pack. "Value" packs aren't always cheaper.
- On promotions, the shelf sign must show the previous price, the discount percentage and the current cash price in guaraníes (opens in a new tab). If anything is missing, ask before you reach the till.
- If the till charges more than the shelf price, Sedeco (the consumer protection office) advises you to complain to the store manager first; if they don't fix it, photograph the price tag and the receipt and file a complaint on Sedeco's website (opens in a new tab).
- Always ask for an invoice (factura): every sale must be invoiced (opens in a new tab), and you'll need it for any complaint.
If you speak Portuguese
San Alberto's first settlers came from the Brazilian states of Paraná and Santa Catarina (opens in a new tab), and a 2018 report noted that Portuguese is spoken in any shop (opens in a new tab). You'll get by easily at the till; the difference is the currency. Prices are in guaraníes, so do the maths before paying with Pix or a Brazilian card.
Quick checklist before you go
- Pick one main store for the weekly shop and a backup near work.
- Write the list around what you can't easily restock midweek.
- Bring reusable bags, and a cool box on hot days.
- Check your receipt before leaving the store.
