To choose a spa or massage place in Mariano Roque Alonso, decide first what you want: a deep-tissue massage, a facial or simply an hour to unwind. Then pick somewhere on your usual route, because crossing the old Transchaco highway at rush hour can take longer than the session itself. Before booking, ask on WhatsApp for the menu with duration and final price, and if the treatment involves machines or injectables, check that the place is licensed.

Massage, spa or beauty clinic: what are you looking for?

In Mariano, as across Greater Asunción, "spa" can mean quite different things. Knowing which one you need saves a lot of messages:

  • Massage studio: relaxing, deep-tissue, hot-stone or lymphatic drainage. This is the most common option and the easiest to book.
  • Spa with sauna or hot tub: not every place has one. If that is what you want, ask before anything else.
  • Beauty center: facials, hair removal, body treatments. Here it matters who does the work and with what equipment.
  • Spa day or couples package: several services in one long visit. These usually need more notice, especially before Mother's Day or Valentine's Day.

If you want a massage for a stubborn knot or an injury, a relaxing massage is no substitute for a physiotherapist. See a doctor for that.

Which part of Mariano should you look in?

Route PY03, the old Transchaco, is the city's main avenue and where the big shops are, according to Wikipedia (opens in a new tab). Choose by how you get around:

  • Along the old Transchaco: handy if you live in Mariano or drive in from Limpio or Asunción. Shopping Mariano sits on the highway, 150 meters from the main entrance of the Expo grounds, and its stores open Monday to Saturday 9:00 to 21:00 and Sundays and holidays 10:00 to 21:00 (Shopping Mariano (opens in a new tab)). It is a useful landmark for meeting up or parking.
  • Barrio Central and Avenida Boquerón: a more neighborhood feel, convenient if you are already near the town center and Plaza La Libertad.
  • The Remanso side: if you come from the Chaco over the Remanso Bridge, look for something before you join the highway and skip the busiest stretch.

Watch out in July: the Expo is held at the Asociación Rural grounds on the same highway. In 2026 it ran from July 11 to 26, during the winter school holidays (Hoy (opens in a new tab)). During those two weeks an afternoon appointment along the Transchaco can get messy, so book a morning slot or another area if you can.

What can a spa do, and what needs a clinic?

A massage or a facial belongs in a spa. Aesthetic medicine is different: according to the Paraguayan Society of Aesthetic Medicine, quoted by La Nación (opens in a new tab), those procedures must be done in a clinic licensed by the Ministry of Health and the Health Superintendency, not in spas, hair salons or at home, and the products must be registered with DINAVISA, the national health regulator.

Laser hair removal deserves the same care. In 2023 the Health Superintendency closed an unlicensed center after a client was burned, and asked businesses to display their license in the waiting room (Hoy (opens in a new tab)). If you do not see it, ask; a legitimate place will happily show it.

What should you ask before booking?

A short WhatsApp message covers almost everything:

  • Real duration: whether 60 minutes means time on the table or includes changing and the intake chat.
  • Final price: whether oils, stones or sauna are included or extra.
  • Who treats you: whether you can choose a male or female therapist.
  • What to bring: whether towels, robe and flip-flops are provided.
  • Deposit and cancellation: how much they ask to hold the slot and how much notice you need to move it.
  • Parking: whether there is on-site parking or you leave the car on the street.

Keep the confirmation with date, time, service and price. Arrive ten minutes early; a rushed start spoils half the massage.

When should you be careful with heat, sauna or massage?

Summers in Mariano are hot and humid, with highs that can pass 40 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Drink water before and after the session, skip the sauna on a full stomach or after alcohol, and avoid walking out of a long massage straight into the early-afternoon sun.

If you are pregnant or have high blood pressure, heart problems, marked varicose veins or a recent injury, check with your doctor before a deep massage or sauna, and tell the therapist before you start.

How do people pay?

QR is now the most common way to pay in shops: 7 in 10 electronic payments in Paraguay are made by QR, according to Bancard data reported by ABC Color (opens in a new tab). Still, ask whether they take cards or bank transfers and whether the deposit is paid in advance. If the session is a gift, ask whether they sell vouchers and how long they are valid.
